How much time do you spend on watching television or listening to radio? Do you surf the internet every day? Do you have account(s) on social media? How many hours do you spend on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter? Your answers to these questions justify the idea that everyone consumes mass media, or different platforms uses to communicate to a large audience. Start Up! Today’s topic embodies essential knowledge that should allow users to engage with media and information channels in a meaningful manner. To start the lesson, read the following instructions. 1. Create your own Weekly Interaction Log. 2. Think of the past week, and record your use and interaction with media and information providers (such as internet, social media, TV, radio, newspaper, etc.). 3. Make sure to indicate how many hours were spent engaged with each one. The time does not have to be exact, and you can estimate the number of hours they spend each week. 4. Use the sample as your guide. 5. After doing the activity, answer the questions that follow. Which media provider did they spend the most time? What roles does media play in their lives? (leisure, learning, communication, etc.) @ms.jowansantos 5 Information Processing Communication is defined as the “act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information, ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc. to someone else” (Merriam-Webster). It plays a pivotal role in human development. Humans have always communicated with one even before traditional media were developed and made communication easier and faster. Communication Media refers to the combination of physical objects used to communicate or mass media communication through physical objects, such as radio, television, computers, telephone, mobile phone, film, etc. It also refers to any physical object used to communicate messages. Media are tools people use to facilitate the transfer of information between a sender and a receiver. The very foundation of communication process is laid by the person who transmits or sends the message. The sender is the initiator of the message that need to be transmitted. After having generated the idea, information etc. the sender encodes it in such a manner that can be well-understood by the receiver (tutorialspoint.com) The SMCR-E Model (Rogers and Shoemaker, 1971) Media are commonly associated with television, radio, newspaper, and the internet. However, other platforms such as phones, letters, books, and others also represent media. What other people perceive as “media” (i.e. television, radio, and newspaper) are actually referred to as mass media, a type of media used to reach a large audience. @ms.jowansantos 6 Most surveys, in both foreign and local contexts, have shown a dramatic increase on media consumption, particularly the internet. According to the Functional Literacy, Education, and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) of the National Statistics Authority (now Philippine Statistics Authority) in 2008, 94% of Filipinos aged 10 to 64 years old are exposed to television, 90% to radio, 83% to newspaper, and 44% to the internet. In 2015, there 44.2 million internet users in the country, the second in the Southeast Asia (next to Indonesia), spending an average of 6.3 hours day online. Media Exposure The media have become a powerful source of information, being able to present all kinds messages on every topic. People tend to become attracted to whatever they read, watch, or hear from media sources, that they keep wanting more. Since one cannot avoid the flood of information from mass media, processing of information then boils down to two choices: Passively accept all the information; or Actively process this information and filter what are useful and disregard what are not. Based on your answers on your weekly log, how many forms of mass media do you use every day or at least once a week? If you are using at least three forms of media, then you are indeed highly exposed to media. @ms.jowansantos 7 From the start of the 21st century, TAKE NOTE! communication became accessible. Media communication has physical and virtual media that can instantly send messages to the different parts of the world. Media Literacy According to the UNESCO MIL is the ability to access, Curriculum for Teachers, Media Literacy is analyze, evaluate, and create understanding and using mass media in either an media in a variety of forms. It assertive or non-assertive way, including an aims to empower citizens by informed and critical understanding of media, providing them with the what techniques they employ and their effect. It aims to engage with traditional media empower citizens by providing them with the and new technologies. competencies (knowledge and skills) necessary to engage with traditional media and new technologies. Teachers are now incorporating new technologies so they can easily communicate with them. Computers helped students in doing their activities in school. Before, teachers are very traditional in giving activities and exercises which pen and paper are being used. Now, they are incorporating various technological tools in delivering the lesson and activities. In this way, teaching and learning are more collaborative and fun. Technology in Education Train Your Mind Compare the media thirty years ago with the media at present. How does the different media of communication helped to improve communication at present? @ms.jowansantos 8 LESSON 2 INFORMATION LITERACY Nowadays, it is easy for an individual to TAKE NOTE! get information. The new media have made access to information easy. Information is a broad term that can cover data, knowledge derived from study, experience, or instruction, signals or symbols. In media world, information is often used to describe knowledge of specific Information Literacy events or situations that has been gathered or received by communication or news. Information Literacy refers to the is the ability to recognize abilities to recognize when information is when information is needed, needed and to locate, evaluate, effectively use, and to locate, evaluate, and and communicate information in its various effectively communicate formats. Information dissemination has gone a information in its various long way with the advent of the new media. formats. People have rediscovered directions to solve information problems. Information literacy, just like media literacy, is all about critical thinking. From the results online search, one should be able to recognize the information and carefully select the useful information. When one fails to muster information literacy in consuming information, he loses the freedom to analyze the data and create personalized information. Irrelevant information or unreliable data may be chosen which will cause confusion and possibly, erroneous knowledge. Information literacy is the keystone of lifelong learning. A person becomes information literate when he has learned to maximize all kinds of information sources on finding answers to his queries (Information Power, 1988) Train Your Mind How do you think will information literacy empower the right to freedom of opinion and expression, freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless frontiers? @ms.jowansantos 9 Have you experienced having information overload? If yes, what did INFORMATION OVERLOAD you do about it? Information is everywhere. Every year, an overwhelming amount of information is being added to a man’s conscious mind and more are expected to come. So, how does someone deal with such number of information? Here are some techniques or ways to organize your ideas: Prewriting – usually the first step in organizing information where you write all the ideas that pop in your head. Mapping – considered the easiest where you show how ideas branch out from another idea. Outlining – this is done when you want to show hierarchical relationship or logical order of information. It is labeled by Roman numerals and letters. Tables – this helps in segregating information by organizing by classification, importance, and function. This usually deals with figures and other objective information. @ms.jowansantos 10 The abundance of information is undeniably beneficial to people from different walks of life. The amount of dependency on the information access has rocketed through the years. Related to this, people have to be critical in assessing information that are available to them. In gathering information online, one must remember that certain actions must be done accordingly. Offenses are being supported by legal measures that is why it is relevant to follow the guidelines in using information. One issue that is commonly committed by information consumers is plagiarism. It is defined as: stealing and passing off ideas or words as one’s own, using another’s work without crediting the source, committing literary theft, and presenting new and original idea derived from an existing source (Merriam- Webster). This makes this action unlawful. Another ethical issue on information is the security. Nowadays, registration process for documents requires a social media account where the user needs to provide his personal information such as complete name, birthday, address, and etc. In this way, it would be easy for someone to access the information and may lead to online theft. Stealing information came from the trend of computer hackers which are experts in doing such crime. That is why it is highly suggested to be extremely cautious and careful in giving personal information when doing Security and Privacy transactions online. @ms.jowansantos 11 One way of being ethical is being accurate. Correctness should be maintained and observed in every detail. This is crucial and should not be violated. Misinformation may harm people in many levels. Problems may become worse that would concern the safety of the people. This just justify how inaccuracy can affect drastically. The vastness of information should not TAKE NOTE! compromise the quality and truthfulness of detail. Remember that being responsible may result to major consequences and legal actions will be applied. Ethical issues are indispensable. It is crucial to know the consequences. Responsibility should be integrated in disseminating information. Train Your Mind Look for an information about a relevant issue today. Analyze the issue and establish a stand by choosing if you are a pro or anti. @ms.jowansantos 12 LESSON 3 TECHNOLOGY LITERACY THEN Then and Now in Technology NOW Man is considered as a thinking animal and even years ago the ancestors were able to discover technology. It is such a milestone that paved the way to make living easy. At present, people still continue to invent and discover different technologies as they continue to elevate and improve themselves as modern individuals. Technology is defined as the science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems. Through the years, it has developed different phases – for example, from traditional telephones to smartphones, from transistor radios to podcast, from paperback books to electronic books – and the advancement never stops. The advent of modern technology is still on going. @ms.jowansantos 13 One of the greatest contributions of man is fire. This was discovered by the Peking man 500,000 years ago in China. However, some experts claim that this contribution had already been discovered much earlier in Africa. Peking Man in China Alongside with fire, other important inventions and innovations like bricks, weaving, pottery, wheels, and others dominated the world. Other modern inventions like light, electricity and wireless communication have been embedded in the lives of people and are still enjoyed at present. Today, everything is just a click away. Recent innovations made people all over the world interconnected. Emergence of various social media made it easy to reach the global community. Social media has become a pioneer of technological innovations which resulted to the invention of well-developed gadgets. Social Media @ms.jowansantos 14 The use of technology has extensively affected people’s lives. As a result, they tend to become transparent to a certain extent which involves some ethical concerns. Technology has positive and negative effects to its users. When any information is just one click away and having a vast access on everything can be both beneficial and detrimental. As a user of different technological tools or advancement, make sure that it is accompanied by social responsibility. Being a technology literate helps you to be responsible in means of using technologies in acquiring and disseminating factual information. Without being such, technology, even if it is it is utmost update or advancement, will be considered worthless. TAKE NOTE! Technology Literacy is the ability of an individual, either working independently or with others, to responsibly, appropriately, and effectively use technological tools. Train Your Mind What are your personal experiences about your use of technology and how are you going to relate it with your understanding about technology literacy? @ms.jowansantos 15 LESSON 4 SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES It was discussed in the previous part the kinds of literacy namely: media, information, and technology. These three literacies function as the framework in understanding the essence of media and information. These are equally important and they are interrelated. Media literacy focuses on how people consume media which includes the knowledge on how to use them. For example, there is a typhoon and a mother is trying to know about the update on the situation, she will choose any medium that can provide the information that she needs. However, information becomes worthless if the consumers do not know how to gather information. This is what information literacy implies. Having the right knowledge on what information is needed must correspond to the form of media used. Information literacy can also affect the use of technology. Both are being innovative in nature and continuously expands. However, if information is not properly filtered, these two will not work properly. The mentioned literacies aim for the common goal of achieving harmonious integration for the benefit of media consumers. These three are after the right consumption of information through effective media use and technological means. @ms.jowansantos 16 Progress Check Media and Information Design Framework A.
