WHAT IS DIGITAL DIVIDE? Digital Divide It describes the uneven distribution of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in society that results in social inequalities and information or knowledge gap. Digital Divide As this technology develops more quickly, those without access are left behind faster. Lack of internet access affects the economy, social opportunities, healthcare disparities and educational equity. WHAT IS DIGITAL ADDICTION? Digital Addiction an impulse control disorder that involves the obsessive and excessive use of digital devices, digital technologies, and digital platforms Digital Addiction impulse control disorder - chronic problems in which people lack the ability to maintain self- control which ultimately results in the onset of extreme disruptions and disfunctions Digital Addiction This may come as a result of an intention, or a habit that has gone worse. It can take the form of any of the following: 1. Cybersex Addiction - This refers to the compulsive use of internet pornography or adult fantasy role- play sites impacting negatively on real life. 2. Cyber-relationship Addiction - is the compulsive need to find and maintain online relationships which are often formed in chat rooms, social networks, and virtual messaging platforms. 3. Net Compulsions- involves virtual activities that are financially and socially damaging, including compulsive online gaming, gambling, stock trading, and online shopping often result in financial and job-related problems. 4. Information overload- characterized by the constant need to gather new information in technological contexts, leading to lower work productivity and less social interaction with family and friends. 5. Computer or Gaming Addiction- involves excessive screen time spent playing video games to the point that it interferes with the afflicted person’s daily functioning. WHAT IS CYBERBULLYING? CYBERBULLYING is the use of digital means of communication that could hurt, intimidate or harass a person. CYBERBULLYING Examples of this are sending hurtful texts or messages, posting embarrassing photos or videos, and spreading mean or malicious rumors online. CYBERBULLYING Philippine law addresses this concern through various statutes including Republic Act No. 10175 also known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. RA 10175 The law covers a wide range of online behaviors, from posting defamatory statements to uploading unauthorized photos or videos that harm the reputation of another person. Worth Knowing and Remembering As a media and information literate individual, apart from being aware of its existence, you should also strive to combat it by promoting the ethical use and consumption of media.
