Digital Divide By: Leah 01 What is Digital Divide? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2rNRevy nQk&ab_channel=Make4Prosperity Digital divide! Digital Divide describe the technology divide(or gap) between countries, demographic groups and economic areas. It is a technical, social and economic issue, which covers the difference in availability and use of modern technology What02can cause Digital Divide? Digital divide! There are many factors that can create a digital divide City versus rural areas More versus less industrially developed areas Socio ergonomic groups High versus low performing technologies City versus rural areas Describe why city and rural area can cause digital divide? Rural areas are usually less developed than cities, this means the people living in the rural areas usually have less money since there are less job opportunities and access to digital devices and internet, while people in cities have more access, job opportunities, and money. More versus less industrially developed areas Describe why less industrially developed areas can cause digital divide? Less industrially developed areas have less job opportunities, this means the people there have less money and weaker economy, meaning that they are less able to purchase or use devices and access the internet, leading to a digital divide. Socio-ergonomic groups Describe why socio-ergonomic group can cause digital divide? Socio-economic groups with lower incomes may have less money to spend on digital devices like computers, smartphones, or internet access. This limits their ability to go online, use digital services, and stay connected. Because of this they may fall behind in accessing information, education, and job opportunities, which can lead to a digital divide between different socio-economic groups. High versus low performing technologies Describe why technologies can cause digital divide? Some technologies are expensive or not available everywhere so people don’t have equal access to them. This means that people with less money or those in certain areas may not be able to afford or access these technologies. As a result, they are less able to use digital devices or go online, making them have limited ability to use digital services, access information, or benefit from online opportunities, contributing to the digital divide. AWESO “The i ntern a luxu et is not ME ry, it neces is a -Barra s i t y” WORDS ck Ob ama- The Future Access to technology is one of the biggest contribution. Having a digital device that is connected to the internet allows access to educational resources, e-commerce, online banking and many other things. For those who do not understand how to use technology, there are courses being run in many areas to help people learn the skill needed. In less developed countries there is a drive to set up cyber café to make technologies available to the community. There is always hope that will eliminate a digital divide. Exam style question A recent BBC news bulletin claimed: The digital divide, like many other economic or social problems, is a global issue. Explain what is meant by the digital divide The divide between people who have access to and the resources to use new information technology and those who don’t. This technology can include the phones, television, computers and the internet. The digital divide can exist between those living in rural areas and those living in urban areas due to lack of infrastructure in rural areas, and can also exist between old and young people since young people have grown up with the technology and older people may feel too old and unwilling to learn about new technology, so they don't know how to use it. The digital divide could be overcome by providing teaching programmes that teach the elderly how to use advanced technology and by donating cheap computers to schools from disadvantaged areas.
