Curriculum Connection Name: ________________________ 8 A3.1, A3.6 Clothing – What traditional clothing did the Métis wear? The Métis wore clothing inspired by their European descent and First Nation culture. They used tanned animal skins, such as deerskins and moose hide, or they used cloth they received in trades with Europeans. Men wore animal skinned pants and jackets, while women wore long dresses. On their feet, the Métis wore moccasins. Transportation – How did they get around? The Métis used horses to travel great distances and to hunt buffalo. They would pull a wagon behind to keep their supplies in. They also got around using canoes through lakes and rivers in the warmer months. During the winter, they used snowshoes and dogs to pull their sleds. Hunting – What animals did they hunt? The Métis people relied heavily on the buffalo to keep them fed. The Métis men would go on long hunting missions to find packs of buffalo. The buffalo provided a large amount of meat, animal hide, and bones for the formation of tools. Nothing was wasted! When the buffalo was unavailable, the Métis hunted moose, elk, deer, rabbit, and wild birds. Women would gather wild berries and edible plants. Governance – Who were the leaders and what laws did they live by? The Métis were always on the move, looking for buffalo. This means they were a nomadic group, as they were always moving. When out for a hunt, leaders would be elected to make rules and laws, and make sure they were followed. The men were always the leaders and decision makers. The women butchered the buffalo and stretched the hide. They cut the meat and prepared it for the community. © Super Simple Sheets supersimplesheets.com
