Cortisol is a hormone released by adrenal glands during times of stress Aldosterone is a hormone released by adrenal glands and plays a role in regulating blood pressure. Basic Parts to Medical Terms There are three basic parts to medical terms: 1. Prefix: 8 Medical Terminology (FAC-102) Is a short word part added before a root to modify its meaning , Prefixes are indicated by a dash after it such as pre-. 2. Root: Is the fundamental unit of each medical word It is the part to which modifying prefixes and suffixes are added. 3. Suffix: Is a short word part added at the end of a root to modify its meaning. Suffixes are indicated by a dash before the suffix, such as -itis. Examples: ▪ Hypothermia (Hypo-therm-ia) (low temperature): Prefix: hypo = low Root: therm = heat=temperature. Suffix: ia = condition. 9 Medical Terminology (FAC-102) Hypothermia means low body temperature than normal. ▪ Hyperthermia (high temperature) Prefix: hyper = high Root: therm = heat=temperature. Suffix: ia = condition. Hyperthermia means high body temperature than normal. ▪ Hyperglycemia (Increased blood glucose levels) Prefix: hyper Root: glycem = glucose. Suffix: ia = condition. 10 Medical Terminology (FAC-102) ▪ Hypoglycemia Prefix: …………… Root: ………….. Suffix: …………. ▪ Myocarditis Prefix: myo = muscle. Root: card = heart. Suffix: itis = inflammation. Myo-card-itis = inflamed muscle layer of heart. Peri-card-itis = inflamed outer layer of heart. Endo-card-itis = inflamed inner layer of heart. 11 Medical Terminology (FAC-102) COMBINING FORMS Defined as the combination of the root and the combining vowel When a suffix begins with a consonant 12 Medical Terminology (FAC-102) (all English letters except A, U, E, I, O). A combining vowel (usually an O) is added between a root and a suffix.
