BIOGRAPHY Abraham Maslow, born in Brooklyn in 1908, was a prominent psychologist who grew up in a poor household. His early life was marked by anti-Semitism and poverty, which influenced his worldview. Maslow pursued psychology and earned his BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Wisconsin. He taught at various institutions, including Brooklyn College and Brandeis University. His theory of human motivation, which posits that humans have various needs, has had a significant impact on psychology, education, and business. Maslow passed away in 1970 at the age of 62. MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a motivational theory that proposes human beings have different types of needs, which are hierarchically arranged in a pyramid. 1. Physiological Needs: At the bottom of the pyramid are your basic needs, things like food, water, and a safe place to live. These are essential for survival. 2. Safety Needs: Above that, we have safety needs. This means having a stable job, living in a safe neighborhood, and having health insurance. 3.Love and Belongingness Need: 1. Sense of belonging. 2. Love and affection. 3. Social connections. 4. Intimacy. 5. Feeling of security. 4.Esteem Needs: 1.Self-esteem. 2. Recognition. 3. Achievement. 4. Respect. 5. Confidence. 5.Self actualization: Self-actualization need is the highest level of need in Maslow's Hierarchy. It refers to the desire to realize one's full potential, pursue personal growth, and become the best version of oneself. Examples: 1. Pursuing a dream career or passion project. 2. Learning new skills or hobbies. 3. Practicing mindfulness or meditation. IMPORTANCE OF MASLOW'S NEEDS: 1. Understands human motivation 2. Prioritizes needs for personal growth 3. Key Principles of humanistic psychology: 1. Holism: Viewing individuals as whole, integrated beings. 2. Free Will: Emphasizing individual freedom to choose and make decisions. 3. Subjective Experience: Focusing on personal experiences, emotions, and values. 4. Self-Actualization: Helping individuals realize their full potential. CONCLUSION Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist best known for his development of the hierarchy of needs physiological needs (food, water, shelter), safety needs (security, stability), love and belonging needs (relationships, friendships), esteem needs (self-esteem, recognition), and self-actualization needs (personal growth, fulfillment).Maslow's hierarchy of needs is significant in daily life as it helps us understand human behavior and motivation. It suggests that individuals must satisfy lower-level needs before they can address higher-level needs. For example, if someone is struggling to meet their basic physiological needs, they may find it difficult to focus on social relationships or personal achievements. Maslow's hierarchy of needs provides valuable insight into human motivation and behavior. Understanding this hierarchy can lead to more effective strategies for achieving personal and professional goals. THANK YOU!
