SOBERANO HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES CABUGAO INSTITUTE-SHS LEARNING COMPETENCIES ¨THE LEARNERS WILL: –ANALYZE THE PSYCHODYNAMICS OF THE PERSON’S PERSONALITY IN TERMS OF ID , EGO , AND SUPEREGO SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES: ¨ THE LEARNERS WILL BE ABLE TO: – IDENTIFY IS PSYCHOANALYSIS AND ITS PROPONENT AS ONE OF THE DOMINANT APPROACHES OF SOCIAL SCIENCES. – ARRANGE AND DEFINE THE JUMBLED PSYCHOLOGICAL TERMS. ¨EXPLAIN THE LEVELS OF AWARENESS/ MIND ¨ANALYZE THE STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY IN TERMS OF ID, EGO AND THE SUPEREGO. (ICEBERG ANALYSIS) ARRANGE THE FOLLOWING JUMBLED PSYCHOLOGICAL TERMS PSYLOGYCHO PSYCHOLOGY CHOPSYANALSISY PSYCHOANALYSIS MUNDIGS FRUDE SIGMUND FREUD TIVATIONMO MOTIVATION SICAB DEENS BASIC NEEDS LOGICALPHYSIO PHYSIOLOGICAL EGOSEPUR SUPEREGO LITYSONAPER PERSONALITY PSCHOANALYSIS’S VIEW OF HUMAN NATURE “LIFE IS ABOUT GAINING PLEASURE AND AVOIDING SHORT RECAP OF PSYCHOLOGY ¨ A SCHOOL OF THOUGHT DEVELOPED BY SIGMUND FREUD. ¨ REFERS TO A THEORY OF THE MIND AND ITS DIRECT CONNECTION TO PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOUR. ¨ THE BASIC PREMISE OF PSYCHOANALYSIS IS THAT THE HUMAN MIND HAS AN UNCONSCIOUS STATE. ¨ THERE ARE THOUGHTS, MEMORIES AND FEELINGS THAT ARE HIDDEN FROM A PERSON’S UNCONSCIOUS MIND, WHICH WITHOUT US KNOWING, AFFECTS THE WAY WE THINK, FEELS AND ACTS. ¨ THIS THEORY STATES THAT MOST UNCONSCIOUS DESIRES ORIGINATE FROM CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES THAT PEOPLE HAVE LONG FORGOTTEN OR REPRESSED. PSYCHOLOGY SIGMUND FREUD SIGMUND FREUD (1856-1939)  -AUSTRIAN, DOCTOR  -FATHER OF PSYCHOANALYSIS  ONE OF THE FIRST PSYCHOLOGISTS TO STUDY HUMAN MOTIVATION  - MAY 6, 1856 – SIGMUND FREUD WAS BORN IN FREYBERG TOWN, CRECH REPUBLIC  1896 – SIGMUND FREUD WAS OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED  1900 – HE RELEASED INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS’ DREAMS - FREUD BELIEVED DREAMS WERE YOUR UNCONSCIOUS MIND TALKING TO YOU. DREAMS WERE VERY SYMBOLIC AND DIFFICULT TO ANALYZE. EG: DRIVING A CAR (DRIVER) MEANS YOU FEEL IN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE (PASSENGER) –SOMEONE ELSE IS IN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE HORSES –SYMBOLIZE FREEDOM FREUD-BELIEVED THAT MENTAL ILLNESS IS A RESULT OF NURTURE, NOT NATURE. HE ASKED THE QUESTION: “WHAT MAKES PEOPLE DO THINGS?” ANSWER: MOTIVATION NEEDS MOTIVATE HUMAN BEHAVIOUR (FOOD, SHELTER, CLOTHING…) BEING DEPRIVED OF A NEED AROUSES A FEELING CALLED A DRIVE OR DESIRE. ANIMALS RESPOND INSTINCTIVELY, HUMANS LEARN VARIOUS WAYS TO RESPOND. HUMAN MOTIVATION EXPLAINS THE REASONS WHY PEOPLE BEHAVE THE WAY THEY DO. PEOPLE HAVE DRIVES OR DESIRES IN THE BACK OF THEIR MINDS IE: WILL TO LIVE, WILL TO DIE SOME OF THESE DESIRES CAUSE PEOPLE TO BEHAVE IRRATIONALLY. MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF HUMAN NEEDS. (FROM MASLOW, A. (1970}. MOTIVATION AND PERSONALITY (2ND ED.). NEW YORK: HARPER & ROW; REPRINTED BY PERMISSION OF HARPER COLLINS PUBLISHERS.) THE HUMAN MIND HAS 3 STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY WHICH INFLUENCE BEHAVIOUR: Ego Superego Id ID- UNCONCONSCIOUS PART OF THE MIND (THIS PART OF THE MIND SEEKS TO BRING US PLEASURE) -IT OPERATES IN PRINCIPLE OF PLEASURE ¨EGO-CONSCIOUS PART OF THE MIND (RATIONAL SELF). ¨ DECIDES WHAT ACTION TO TAKE FOR POSITIVE MEANS AND WHAT TO DO BASED ON WHAT IS BELIEVED IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. ¨THE BALANCE BETWEEN ID AND SUPEREGO ¨IT OPERATES ON REALITY PRINCIPLE. ¨SUPEREGO- UNCONSCIOUS PART OF THE MIND THAT ¨ACTS AS OUR CONSCIENCE. REMINDS US OF WHAT WE SHOULD DO. ABLE TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN GOOD AND BAD, RIGHT AND WRONG IT OPERATES ON MORAL PRINCIPLES IF PEOPLE FOLLOW THEIR SUPEREGO, THEY WILL FEEL PROUD BUT IF THEY DON’T FOLLOW, THEY WILL FEEL Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, compared the human mind to an iceberg. The tip above the water represents consciousness, and the vast region below the surface symbolizes the unconscious mind. Of Freud’s three basic personality structures—id, ego, and superego—only the id is totally unconscious. LEVEL OF MENTAL LIFE 1. UNCONSCIOUS CONTAINS ALL THE FEELING, URGES OR INSTINCT THAT ARE BEYOND OUR AWARENESS BUT IT AFFECT OUR EXPRESSION, FEELING, LEVEL OF MENTAL LIFE 2. CONSCIOUS ONLY LEVEL OF MENTAL LIFE THAT ARE DIRECTLY AVAILABLE TO US THE AWARENESS OF OUR OWN MENTAL PROCESS (THOUGHTS/FEELINGS) LEVEL OF MENTAL LIFE 3. PRECONSCIOUS FACTS STORED IN A PART OF THE BRAIN, WHICH ARE NOT CONSCIOUS BUT ARE AVAILABLE FOR POSSIBLE USE IN THE FUTURE (E.G. A PERSON WILL NEVER THINK OF HER HOME ADDRESS AT THAT MOMENT BUT WHEN HER FRIEND ASK The mind is like an iceberg, it floats with one- seventh of its bulk above water" (S. Freud) ¨THE ID AND THE SUPEREGO ARE IN CONSTANT CONFLICT. YOUR DRIVE TELLS YOU TO DO ONE THING , WHILE SOCIETY TELLS YOU TO DO SOMETHING ELSE. IF YOU DON’T RESOLVE THIS CONFLICT BETWEEN THE ID AND THE EGO, YOU MAY EXPERIENCE UNHAPPINESS OR MENTAL DISTRESS. THUS, IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND MOTIVATION, YOU MUST UNDERSTAND WHAT IS IN YOUR UNCONSCIOUS MEMORY. THIS IS THE BASIS FOR PSYCHOANALYSIS. EXAMPLE: EG I want to I am on eat EatsOa a super chocolat small diet! e! bar of I chocolat SUPERE D e GO ACTIVITY: ¨EMPTY OUTLINES – DISTRIBUTE A PARTIALLY COMPLETED OUTLINE OF TODAY’S LECTURE AND ASK STUDENTS TO FILL IT IN. FILL IN A PARTIALLY COMPLETED OUTLINE OF TODAYS LECTURE. MASLOW’S HEIRARCHY OF HUMAN NEEDS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. LEVELS OF MENTAL LIFE 1. 2. 3. STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY 1. 2. 3. PRESENT THE VIDEO DISCUSSION OF THE STRUCTURE OF PERSONALITY. ONE MINUTE PAPER ¨: USING 1 HALF SHEET OF PAPER, ANSWER THE QUESTION “WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU LEARNED TODAY?” MUDDIEST POINT ¨– LIKE THE MINUTE PAPER, USING 1 HALF SHEET OF PAPER, ANSWER THE QUESTION “WHAT IS THE MOST CONFUSING” POINT/CONCEPT?”
