1.1 | Personality and Professional Development What is personality? Personality is the fundamental and foremost determinant of individual behavior. It is the sum total of an individual physiology and psychology system, based on the characteristic set of behavior, cognition, and emotional pattern that evolve from biological and environmental factors. The human personality includes: Physical aspect of the external appearance, behaviour, and social stimulus Inner awareness of self - Determining/Recognizingstrong & weak points about oneself or areas for Improvements The totality of the person - both Physical aspect and Inner awareness Some definitions of personality are as follows: It is the expression of what you are and what you do. It is the reflection and interpretation of your inner self to other people. Image you create to other people. Embodiment of feelings and behavior which makes man the unique person that he is. Reflection of inner self. Definitions of personality from other authors: Gordon Allport: "The dynamic organization within the individual of those psychophysical systems that determine his unique adjustments to his environment" J.B. Kolasa: "Personality is a broad, amorphous designation relating to fundamental approaches of persons to others and themselves. To most psychologists and students of behaviour, this term refers to the study of the characteristic traits of an individual, relationships between these traits and the way in which a person adjusts to other people and situations" Gluck: "Personality is a pattern of stable states and characteristics of a person that influences his or her behaviour toward goal achievement. Each person has unique ways of protecting these states" James D Thompson and Donald Van Houten: "Personality is a very diverse and complex psychological concept. The word ‘personality’ may mean something like outgoing, invigorating interpersonal abilities … but we must also recognize and explain the fact that development results in man acquiring a distinctiveness or uniqueness which gives him identity which enables him and us to recognize him as apart from others. These distinguishing characteristics are summarized by the term ‘personality" Fred Luthans: "Personality is how people affect others and how they understand and view themselves, as well as their pattern of inner and outer measurable traits and the person situation interaction" McClelland: "...as the most adequate conceptualization of an individual’s behaviour in all its details which the scientist can provide at a moment of time" What determines one's personality? The various determinants of personality are broadly classified into three groups: 1. Heredity Heredity refers to biological factors such as qualities from the parents to the children through a biological mechanism. Examples of heredity that are generally influenced by one's parents are physical stature, facial attractiveness, temperament, and interests. 2. Social Environment Environment generated to a child also exerts important influence in shaping his/her personality. Research studies have also revealed that parents have more effect on the personality development of their children as compared to other members of the family. The socialization process starts with the initial contact between a mother and infant. Then they become gradually in contact with the social groups outside home or family such as peers, school friends, and members of the community. 3. Situation The heredity and environment are the primary determinants of personality but the situation influences the effects of the two factors on personality. The individual personality does change depending on the situation because of the different demands of the different situation from the aspects of one's personality. What is the concept of personality development? The concept of personality development is the notion of self or self-concept. The "self" is the humanistic term for who we really are as a person. The humanistic approach states that the "self is composed of concepts unique to ourselves." The self-concept includes these three components: 1. Self-worth Self worth comprises of what we think about ourselves. Self-worth is developed during early childhood and were formed from the interaction of the child with the mother and father. 2. Self-image Self-image is how we see ourselves. We might perceive ourselves as a good or bad person, beautiful or ugly. Self-image affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves in the world. 3. Ideal self This is the person who we would like to be. It consists of our goals and ambitions in life and is dynamic or forever changing. These five aspects are very important for every individual for it can be a guide and basis to change for the better and to become more responsible in understanding every situation that's happening in our society. 1. Physical Aspect of Personality The physical aspect of life includes: our health the way we take care of our bodies what we eat how often we exercise keeping our bodies clean our daily posture how we carry ourselves When you go out and people get to see you, the first thing they notice about you is your physique. It is until they get close to you and engage in a conversation before they know the kind of person you are. This is why you have to improve your physical look at all times. Some of the ways to do this are to eat balanced diet meals, drink a lot of water, and exercise. This is all about the state of health, the qualities, actions, and things that are connected to a person's body. This aspect helps an individual to become healthy and be able to perform the tasks given to them for their everyday life and become physically successful. Our body is the most precious gift we have and if we don't stay healthy, we certainly cannot enjoy all the other aspects of life. For that reason, taking care of our physical health is the very first step on the road to happiness. It is never too late to start changing our habits. A healthy body is a healthy mind and we will feel more confident, motivated, and energized. Some ways on how to develop your physical aspect: Find ways to be physically active everyday.
