How do plants help us live our daily lives? What would happen to animals if there were no plants? ESSON1: L Agriculture and Its Branches WHATIS AGRICULTURE? The term Agriculture is derived from two Latin words ager or agri meaning soil and cultura meaning cultivation. Agriculture is an applied science which encompasses all aspects of crop production including horticulture, livestock rearing, fisheries, forestry, etc. Agriculture is defined as an art, science and business of producing crops and livestock for economic purposes. AGRICULTURE is defined as including ‘horticulture, fruit growing, seed growing, dairy farming and livestock breeding and keeping and using of land RAN B ofCHES Agriculture AGRONOMY This refers to growing different types of crops, such as food plants, animal feed, fiber plants (like cotton), sugar crops (like sugarcane), and plants used for oil (like sunflower or soybean). HORTICULTURE This is about growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, decorative plants, spices, and plants. FORESTRY This focuses on growing trees on a large scale to provide wood, rubber, and raw materials for industries. ANIMAL HUSBANDRY This involves raising animals for food and using their manure to help grow crops. FISHERY SCIENCE This means raising fish, shrimp, and prawns in water to provide food, animal feed, and fertilizer. AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING This involves using farm machines for preparing the field, planting, harvesting, processing crops after harvest, and conserving soil and water. HOME SCIENCE This focuses on using crops and farm products in better ways to ensure healthy food, add value to them, and prepare nutritious meals.
