Lec VIII 26 11 2023 ▪ Research Limitations o Literature Review ▪ Research Limitations Every research has some limitations; thus, it is normal for you to face certain limitations when conducting your study. You could face: research design limitations, data limitations or even financial limitations. Regardless of which type of limitation you may face, your research would be impacted, thus: you should mention them without any hesitation. Sides Prepared By: Prof. Dr. Abdel-Mohsen Mostafa 2 When including this section in the introduction !.. make sure that: you clearly state the type of constraint you faced. This will help your supervisor understand what problems you went through working on your research. However, one aspect that you should take care of is that your results, in no way, should be influenced by these restrictions. Sides Prepared By: Prof. Dr. Abdel-Mohsen Mostafa 3 The results should not be compromised, or else: your research will not be deemed as authentic and reliable. ▪ After you’ve mentioned your research limitations, discuss how you overcame them to produce perfect research. ❑ Also mention that your results are in no way adversely impacted by your limitations, and: that you’ve produced research with accurate results the academic community can reply on. Sides Prepared By: Prof. Dr. Abdel-Mohsen Mostafa 5 - Importance of a Good Literature Review: A literature review may consist of simple a summary of key sources, but it usually has an organizational pattern, and: combines both summary and synthesis, often within specific conceptual categories. Sides Prepared By: Prof. Dr. Abdel-Mohsen Mostafa 6 A summary is a recap of the important information of the source, But: a synthesis is a re-organization, or a reshuffling, of that information in a way that informs how you are planning to investigate a research problem. Sides Prepared By: Prof. Dr. Abdel-Mohsen Mostafa 7 The analytical features of a literature review ✓Give a new interpretation of old material or combine new with old interpretations, ✓Trace the intellectual progression of the field, including major debates, ✓Depending on the situation, evaluate the sources and advise the reader on the most pertinent or relevant, or: Sides Prepared By: Prof. Dr. Abdel-Mohsen Mostafa 8 ✓Usually in the conclusion of a literature review, identify where gaps exist in how a problem has been researched to date. Sides Prepared By: Prof. Dr. Abdel-Mohsen Mostafa 9 - The purpose of a literature review is to: - Place each work in the context of its contribution to the understanding of the research problem being studied, - Describe the relationship of each work to the others under consideration, - Identify new ways to interpret, and shed light on any gaps in previous research, Sides Prepared By: Prof. Dr. Abdel-Mohsen Mostafa 10 - Resolve conflicts amongst seemingly contradictory previous studies, - Identify areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication of effort, - Point the way in fulfilling a need for additional research, and: - Locate your own research within the context of existing literature. Sides Prepared By: Prof. Dr. Abdel-Mohsen Mostafa 11 Types of Literature Reviews Systematic review, Semi-systematic review Integrative review. Argumentative Review: Historical Review Methodological Review Theoretical Review Sides Prepared By: Prof. Dr. Abdel-Mohsen Mostafa 12 - Development of the Literature Review There are four phases involved in conducting a literature review : (1) Designing the review, (2) Conducting (Literature search ) finding materials relevant to the subject , (3) Data abstraction & analysis and interpretation , (4) Structuring and writing up the review, discussing the findings and: conclusions of pertinent literature.
