INTACH FACT SHEET ™ The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) was founded on January 27, 1984 as a Registered Society in New Delhi with the vision to spearhead heritage awareness and conservation in India. ™ Today INTACH is recognized as one of the world’s largest heritage organizations, with over 200 chapters across the country. In the past 39 years INTACH has pioneered the conservation and preservation of not just our natural and built heritage but intangible heritage as well. ™ The INTACH Logo, based on the anthropomorphic copper figure from Shahabad, Uttar Pradesh, belonging to the enigmatic Copper Hoards of the Ganga Valley is the perceived brand image of INTACH. The classic simplicity and vitality of its lines makes it a striking example of primitive man’s creative genius. (Circa 1800-1700 BC.) ™ Headquartered in New Delhi, it operates through various divisions such as Architectural Heritage, Natural Heritage, Art and Material Heritage, Intangible Cultural Heritage, Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS), Crafts and Community Cell, Chapters, INTACH Heritage Academy, Heritage Tourism, Listing Cell and Library, Cultural Affairs, INTACH Knowledge Centre. ™ In the year 1986 Conservation Plan of Varanasi Heritage Zone under Ganga Action was drawn. ™ INTACH prepared the conservation plan of Ekamra Kshetra (old Bhubaneswar Heritage Zone) in 1989. ™ In 1991 INTACH prepared the conservation plan for the Heritage Zone Ujjain. ™ The INTACH Central Office and other divisions at Delhi shift from 71, Lodhi Estate, to the Bharatiyam Complex in Nizamuddin to enable the construction of the New Headquarters building in 1992-93. ™ Anirudh Bhargava – INTACH Environmental Award instituted for exemplary contribution to the protection of Environment / Natural Heritage. ™ The INTACH Pondicherry Chapter restored the famous Hotel de L’Orient in the year 2000. The building received the UNESCO Asia Pacific award for sensitive restoration. ™ Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum Trust was established for the revitalisation and management of the Museum in 2003 ™ In 2007, United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organization grants INTACH special consultative status. ™ In 2008, INTACH signs MoU with Government of Delhi to nominate Delhi as a UNESCO World Heritage City. ™ In 2008, INTACH signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Delhi for the conservation of monuments in Delhi in the preparation of the Commonwealth Games 2010. ™ INTACH Pupul Jayakar Award and memorial lecture is delivered on World Heritage Day (18th April) for remembering her contribution to the preservation and promotion of India’s Heritage. ™ INTACH signs MoU with Government of Jharkhand for the conservation and Development works at 29 sites in the State. Under the 13th Finance Commission Grant in 2011. ™ In 2012, INTACH Centre for Conservation Training and Capacity Building established. This was aimed at training and capacity building in the field of conservation ™ The 16th century Reis Magos Fort was restored by INTACH and was opened to the public on the 5th of June 2012. ™ In 2014, INTACH Centre for Conservation Training and Capacity Building is renamed as “INTACH Heritage Academy (Training – Research – Capacity Building) ™ The Odisha State Maritime Museum was developed by INTACH. It was inaugurated on August 21, 2014 by the Hon’ble Chief Minister Mr. Naveen Patnaik. ™ INTACH's documentary film, The Black Pottery of Nizamabad, won “Director Special Award” at the Heritage Film Festival-2015. ™ INTACH has been appointed by Govt. of India for Design and Project Management Consultancy services for the conservation works of 12 earthquake affected cultural heritage sites (including 11 sites in Kathmandu valley and 1 site in Solukhumbu) under India’s Grant Assistance in line with Govt. of Nepal’s Basic Guidelines and Manual for Conservation and Reconstruction of Heritage affected by 2015 earthquake. ™ INTACH Conservation Institute Delhi undertook the prestigious assignment of conserving the art objects housed in the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi and includes one woven textile depicting the Sun Temple of Konark in Odisha and a Persian carpet. ™ INTACH has been involved in the development of the Man Mandir Virtual Experiential Museum at Varanasi. The museum is Uttar Pradesh’s first virtual Experiential Museum and was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on 19th February 2019. ™ ICI undertook the conservation of Flora Fountain, at the Hutatma Chowk (Martyr's Square), Mumbai. The project was completed in December 2018. ™ The Martand Singh Memorial Award was instituted by INTACH to honour the memory of Shri Martand Singh and recognize his outstanding contribution in the field of crafts and textiles. ™ INTACH’s Namami Gange project is being undertaken for the Jal Shakti Ministry, Government of India, under the National Mission for clean Ganga (NMCG) scheme. INTACH is assisting the Ministry in the capacity of a knowledge partner. ™ Till date about 54,000 heritage resources in 150 cities/towns have been listed by INTACH. Some of listings such as that of Delhi, Chennai, and Kolkata are published by INTACH and have been notified by the local authorities. ™ INTACH prepared a Master Plan for trekking for Sikkim, as a mean to promote development. ™ On World Heritage Day, 18th April 2021, INTACH launched a year-long social media campaign to bring attention to the lesser known unprotected built heritage of India. ™ On the occasion of 39th INTACH Foundation Day, 2023, INTACH recently launched a new mobile app for heritage survey which can be used by everyone to list a heritage property/site ™ The year 2024 celebrates 40th INTACH Foundation Day Divisions of INTACH Architectural Heritage INTACH plays a vital role in the listing, documentation, regulations, conservation and revitalization of heritage buildings, sites, conservation zones and precincts of architectural, historical and cultural value. The INTACH Charter for unprotected Architectural Heritage sites 2004, guides conservation architects working on heritage projects in the country. Natural Heritage The Natural Heritage Division frames strategies for eco-restoration: afforestation, lake and wetland management, sustainable ecotourism, stream regeneration and ecology, decentralized waste water treatment and recycling, integrated rural development plans, urban environment plans and natural habitat management. Art and Material Heritage Over a period of time several conservation centres were established across the country to extend professional assistance for meeting conservation needs of art and heritage collections. These well equipped scientific laboratories collectively function as the Indian of Conservation Institutes (ICI). Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) The Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) division started in June 2008. It works towards the revival and documentation of ICH, such as oral traditions (including languages), performing arts, social practices, rituals and festive events; knowledge and practices concerning nature and universe; traditional craftsmanship and so on. INTACH Heritage Academy INTACH Heritage Academy, formerly Centre for Conservation, Training and Capacity Building, is envisioned to be a centre of excellence for training and capacity building in the conservation and management of cultural Heritage in India. Heritage Tourism Division In December 2005, the Heritage Tourism Division was set up to extend INTACH’s mandate beyond conservation including a cogent system of sustaining conserved sites. Craft, Community and Heritage One of the major concerns of INTACH has been the revival of crafts, traditional knowledge systems and preserving craft skills to enhance the livelihood of craft communities in various pockets of India. The division is actively involved in developing community based enterprise and helping them to develop and upgrade their craft skills inculcation a pride in their heritage and confidence in their skills. Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) Heritage Awareness and people’s involvement in heritage issues is one of INTACH’s primary mandates. The Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) of INTACH was set up in 1998 to promote heritage education and spread awareness about India’s natural, built, cultural and living heritage to all people, particularly the youth. Cultural Affairs Division The Cultural Affairs Division was seen and conceived as a platform to further INTACH's mandate of spreading heritage awareness. The division seeks to create awareness about heritage through regular cultural programmes - film screenings, talks, lectures and so on, organized on heritage issues, drawing experts from various tangible and intangible fields of heritage.
