IM Injection sites **What is the name of the injection site:** Vastus Lateralis **Where is it located:** Lateral (side) middle third of thigh between the greater trochanter (hip bone) and lateral femoral condyle (end of thigh bone) **How do you locate it:** Place one hand on the top of the thigh\'s lateral aspect. Place the other hand on top of the knee with the fingers and thumb extended. The vastus lateralis muscle is located between these two points, and anywhere in this area is suitable for an injection **How many mls can it take:** up to 5mls **2 Facts about it:** preferred site for anaphylaxis management. Preferred site for infants and neonates **What is the name of the injection site:** deltoid muscle **Where is it located:** the deltoid muscle is below the acromion process and above the deltoid tuberosity (where the deltoid muscle attaches) **How do you locate it:** 2 finger widths down from the acromion process, make an upside-down v and injection in between. **How many mls can it take:** up to 2mls of medication, but 1ml is recommended **2 facts about it:** common site for vaccinations. Preferred injection site for children aged 3 to 18 because their muscle mass is more developed. **What is the name of the injection site:** ventrogluteal **Where is it located:** on the side of the hip, just below the iliac crest **How do you locate it:** place your thumb against the groin, your pointer finger on the iliac crest, and spread your middle finger to form a V. the injection site is at the bottom of the v where your fingers meet. **How many mls can it take:** up to 3mls **2 facts about it:** it's considered one of the safest areas for IM injections because it has thick muscles, few blood vessels and fewer nerves. Considered to be the least painful. **What is the name of the injection site:** dorsogluteal **Where is it located:** located above the posterior iliac crest and left of the greater trochanter **How do you locate** it: draw an imaginary line between the greater trochanter and posterior superior ililac spine. Locate the centre of the line and find a point 1 inch superior to it **How many mls can it take:** up to 4mls **1 facts about it:** Not recommended due to proximity of the sciatic nerve.
