IV cannula (Intravenous cannula) A delicate tube equipped with a medical needle that helps to create an IV line by penetrating the wall of the vein to inject drugs and give intravenous solutions, blood or blood derivatives into the bloodstream. Steps of the procedure 1) Wear gloves 2) Apply a tourniquet 3) Ask the patient to open and close fist 4) Tap the vein 5) Apply alcohol swab 6) Insert the cannula at level of (angle 15 ͦ ) 7) Blood appears in the flashback chamber) 8) Flat the cannula 9) Insert the cannula alone (without the needle) 10) Open the tourniquet (release the tourniquet) 11) Pull out the needle completely (with applying pressure by your finger to occlude the vein) 12) Plug the cannula 13) Inject normal saline to confirm 14) Apply fixator tape 15) IV cannula can stay for 3 – 4 days, then it has to be removed.
