HUM1 CHAPTER 1 **Humanities -** to show qualities of rationality, kindness, and tenderness. - To be truly human is to be culturally enhanced and refined. - It is the art itself. - is the branch of learning which is concerned with the human thoughts, feelings and relations (human expressions) **Culture -** comes from Latin terms cultus-colere which means to cultivate, to develop. - Is the general way of life of human society, including ways of thinking, beliefs, customs, language, art, and traditions. **So therefore, if we talk about humanities, we are interested with the knowing the ways of life developed by people as expression of themselves.** **WHY STUDY HUMANITIES?** - Those who master the humanities and can "walk a mile in someone else's moccasins" will be far more marketable than those who cannot". - The humanities can first be used to understand the past which has created the present. - The culture which we have was shaped by the past. - Can also be used to realize differing interpretations of life and history - Studying facts of the past helps to understand literature of the past. - Art reflects the cultures of the past, and shows how we achieved what we have today. - Humanities study brings us in contact with the best life has to offer -- history, music, art, philosophy, and literature. It is the study and contact with these topics that enrich our existence. **IMPORTANCE OF STUDYING HUMANITIES** - It fosters understanding across barriers of race, class, gender and ethnicity. -  It helps us see the interconnectedness of all areas of knowledge - how they affect and complement one another. - It introduces us to people who have never met, places we have never visited, and ideas that never crossed our minds. - It helps us conceptualize a global perspective by studying cultures and tradition by artworks throughout the world. - It supports and strengthens local arts community by learning to appraise the value of creativity. - It helps us to address the challenges we face together in our families, our communities, and our nation. - It emphasizes the dignity of every human being. **FUNDAMENTAL PRINCILPLES OF HUMANITIES** - Its main goal is to the development of human virtue, in all its form, to all its fullest. - It does not aim to remake humanity but rather to reform social order by understanding what is basically inalienably human. - It regards human as its central character along with his aesthetic, limitless potentials which can be used as tools in transforming. **NATURE OF ART** - Comes from the Aryan root AR meaning "join", or "put together" - Two Greek verbs are derived: Artizein -- to prepare, and Arkiskein -- to put together. - The Latin terms ARS, ARTIS mean everything that is artificially made or composed by man. - More often than not, people are blind to this beauty and only those who have developed a fine sense of appreciation can experience and see the art the way the artist did. - Hence, refining one\'s ability to appreciate arts allows him to deeply understand the purpose of an artwork and recognize the beauty it possesses. - In cultivating an appreciation of art, one should also exercise and develop his taste for things that are fine and beautiful. - This allows individuals to make intelligent choices and decisions in acquiring necessities and luxuries, knowing what gives better value for time or money while taking into consideration the aesthetic and practical value. - Learning to appreciate art no matter what vocation or profession you have, will lead to a fuller and more meaningful life. **THE ROLE OF CREATIVITY IN ART MAKING** - Creativity requires thinking outside the box. - In art, creativity is what sets apart one artwork from another. - When we have not seen anything like it - When it is out of the ordinary - When it is not just a copy or imitation of someone\'s work - \...THERE IS ORIGINALITY! **ART AS A PRODUCT OF IMAGINATION, IMAGINATION AS A PRODUCT OF ART** - **\"**Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.\" - Albert Einstein - Imagination is not constrained by the walls of the norm but goes beyond that. - Through imagination, one is able to craft something bold, something new, and something better in the hopes of creating something that will stimulate change. - In artist\'s mind sits a vast gallery of artworks - An artwork does not need to be a real thing but can be something that is imaginary. - However, something imaginary does not necessarily mean it cannot be called art. Artists use their imagination that gives birth to reality through creation. - In the same way that imagination produces art, art also inspires imagination. (IMAGINATION = ART) **ART AS EXPRESSION** - \"What an artist does to an emotion is not to induce it but express it. Through expression, he is able to explore his own emotions and at the same time, create something beautiful out of them.\" - Robin George Collingwood - Expressing emotions is different from describing emotions. - This makes people\'s art not a reflection of what is outside or external to them, but a reflection of their inner selves. **Art -** The making or composing of any object useful for human needs that is, for the contemplation and enjoyment of its meaning or beauty. - the skillful arrangement or composition of some common qualities of nature to express human feelings, emotions, or thoughts in a meaningful and enjoyable way. - the subjective expressions of man's thoughts and feelings, thus Humanities too. **ASSUMPTIONS OF ART** **Art is timeless.** - Famous works of art are valued by - generations past, present and future - Created in such a way that all people, young or old, deaf or mute, can all enjoy and take a meaning away from it. **Art is cultural.** - Art is not nature. - Art involves experience. - Art as expression, as a form of creation. **Is art an imitation or creation?** - Art tends to imitate, but to express nature with clarity and meaning. - Art therefore is not mere copying of things and nature but is a creative activity. **SYSTEM IN ART APPRECIATION** **Art appreciation** - is the knowledge and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities that identify all great art. - The more you appreciate and understand the art of different eras, movements, styles and techniques, the better you can develop, evaluate and improve your own artwork. (4 SYSTEMS IN ART APPRECIATION) 1. **Describe** - say something about the details of the artwork and the artist. - kind of artwork, medium - name of the artwork - date of the artwork when created. - major events in history during the artwork was created. 2. **Analyze** - identify the elements such as shape, texture, color, form, value, lights and shadow, line and space. - major art principles - color use - use of shape - visual impact 3. **Interpretation** - seeks to explain the meaning of the work. - artist's statement - what do you think it means. - what do you think it means to you. - its relation to you and your life - your feelings and emotions while looking at it 4. **Judgment** - a personal evaluation based on the understandings of the works. - intrinsic value or worth - benefits of others - effects to others - is it okay? **WHY ARE CERTAIN THINGS UGLY?** - Everything in nature and art is beautiful for everything is created perfect according to its nature and form. - All things are beautiful and perfect in them, but not in relation to us. - Objects which we see every day tend to lose their significance to us. - People who have been in the Banawe Rice Terraces for a long time will not see beauty of their mountains as in the eyes of a tourist. - Certain things are dangerous to our lives like snakes and other wild animals. - Certain conditions in human life such as poverty and disease are referred to as ugly but once painted in a canvass or described in a novel, they become meaningful and beautiful. **CATEGORIES OF BEAUTIFUL** **The Sublime -** enjoyment is aroused by astonishment and awe like looking at the starry heavens, the majesty of mountain ranges, the heroic acts of heroes and saints. **The Nice -** enjoyment is aroused by sympathy, love, benevolence, tenderness and modesty like children, flowers, flower arrangement, artefacts. **The Comic -** enjoyment because it makes us laugh like satire and irony, the exaggerated, the repetitious, the ridiculous and the playful. **DIVISIONS OF ARTS** **With respect to purpose** 1. **Fine Arts -** products of the human creativity in so far as they express beauty in different ways and different media like drawing, painting, sketching. 2. **Major Arts -** characterized by their actual and potential expressiveness like music, dance, literature. 3. **Minor Arts -** connected with practical uses and purposes like interior design, landscape, porcelain making. **With respect to Media and Forms** 1. **Plastic Arts -** perceived by sense of sight like sculpture, architecture etc. 2. **Phonetic Arts -** based on sounds and words like music, drama, literature etc. 3. **Kinetic Arts -** rhythmic movement like the different kinds of dances etc. 4. **Pure Arts -** which take only one medium of expression as sound in music, color in painting etc. 5. **Mixed Arts -** which use two or more media like opera, a combination of music, poetry and drama. **CLASSIFICATION OF ARTS** 1. **Space Arts** -- visual arts - 2-dimension (seen only in one angle) - painting, printing, photography, sketching. - 3-dimensional (seen in several angles) -- sculpture, architecture 2. **Time Arts** -- auditory arts -- music, dance, combination-musical theater/opera 3. **Visual Arts** -- it deals with any creation of an artist which are primarily - **Visual in nature** - **Painting --** from the Latin word "pingere", meaning to paint. - It involves the application of paint, pigment, color, or other medium to a surface (support base) in order to present a picture of a subject - Walls, paper, canvas, wood, concrete glass, cloth, or cardboard - **Sculpture** - from the Latin word "sculpere" which means to cut or removing pieces from a stone - It is the art of carving, modelling, casting, assembling, and constructing materials into figures of forms to achieve three-dimensional piece - **Architecture** - it is the art of planning, designing, and producing buildings - It is the art of designing and constructing buildings and other non-building structures for man's use - **Plastic arts** - it has three-dimensional forms - Examples are architectural designs and Construction of buildings and other structures - Landscape gardens, furnishing design, City Planning, Interior Design, Industrial Design etc. 4. **Performing Arts -** it is a live art and the artist's medium is mainly the human body which he or she uses to perform but also employs other kind of art such as visual art, props, or sound. - The fact that performance art is live makes it intangible, which means it cannot be bought or traded as a commodity. - **Dance -** Generally involves movement of the body, usually rhythmic and dependent to music - Performed in many different cultures and used as a form of expression, social interaction, and exercise or presented in a spiritual or performance setting. - Ballroom, ballet, modern dance, folk dance, etc. - **Music -** the art of combining sounds of varying pitches to produce a coherent composition that is melodious, harmonious, intelligible, and expressive of ideas and emotions - vocal music, instrumental music, opera, musical comedy, musical play, etc. - **Theater** - a play or drama that is being re-created by an actress or actors to form a dramatic art form - it considers several elements such as acting, gesture, lighting, sound effects, musical score, scenery, and props - Live performance (drama, musical, tragedy, comedy, and improvisation) - **Film -** called as motion picture - the art of moving images - a visual medium that tells stories and exposes reality - it the manipulation of reality through image and sound 5. **Literary Arts** - written material such as poetry, novels, poems, drama and others - it is highly expressive in nature with the choice of words and emotional images - it focuses on unique writing style - it may be fiction or non-fiction 6. **Digital Arts** - like the graphics arts, it has two-flat dimensional surface such as painting, drawing, photography, etc. - it includes products of the printing industry with the aid of computer and other electronic devices 7. **Pop Arts** - this group is characterized as gay and lively - it includes film, newspaper, magazines, radio, and television 8. **Gustatory Art of the Cuisine** - This involves skill in food preparation or food art. 9. **Decorative Arts** - They are visual objects that are produced for aesthetic function for houses, interior designs, offices, cars, and other structures.
