Name: ________________________ 43 Curriculum Connection B2.1, B2.2 Overview – Hormonal System The hormonal system is also called the endocrine system. This system is made up of glands that produce hormones in our bodies. Hormones are chemical messages sent by our bodies that carry information and instructions from one set of cells to another. What Does it Do? The endocrine glands release hormones into our bloodstream. This allows the hormones to travel to other parts of the body. Hormones help control our mood, growth and development, metabolism, and reproduction. The endocrine system is in charge of how much of each hormone is released. The release of these hormones is affected by stress, infection, and diet. If we have too much or too little of any hormone, it can be harmful for the body. Sometimes medication is necessary to balance our hormonal levels. Gland Function – What it does for our body Hypothalamus The hypothalamus connects the hormonal system to the nervous system so that our brain can help regulate the release of hormones. Pituitary The pituitary gland is a small pea sized gland that is referred to as the “master gland” because it controls the following: growth hormone, milk supply for breastfeeding mothers, thyroid hormones, adrenalin, water balance levels, and the contractions of the uterus during labour. Thyroid Produces thyroid hormones that control the rate at which cells burn fuels from food to make energy. Adrenal Glands © Super Simple Sheets There are two parts: the adrenal cortex which controls the salt and water balance, metabolism, and the immune system. Secondly, the adrenal medulla, which increases blood pressure and heart rate when the body is under stress. This is often called adrenaline. supersimplesheets.com
