Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) Lesson 5 Objectives Describe Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) award Identify (GAMABA) awardees and their contribution Appreciate art forms made by the GAMABA awardees Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) This award was institutionalized by 1992 Republic Act n0. 7355, with the NCCA in charge of its implementation Panel of experts and reviewers will screen and review the nominations President- proclamation Qualifications: Criteria The artist should be an inhabitant of an indigenous/traditional cultural community anywhere in the Philippines The artist must have engaged in a folk art tradition that has been in existence and documented for at least fifty years. The artist must have consistently performed or produced works of superior and distinctive quality over a significant period. Qualifications: Criteria The artist must possess a mastery of tools and materials needed by the art, and must have established reputation in the art as master The artist must have passed on and/or will pass on to other members of the community his/her skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known. A traditional artist who possesses all the qualities of a Manlilikha ng Bayan candidate due to age or infirmity has left/him/her incapable of teaching further, may still be recognized, given the following: The artist has created a significant body of works and/or has consistently displayed excellence in the practice of his/her art The artist has been instrumental in the revitalization of his/her community’s artistic tradition. The artist has passed on to the other members of the community the skills in the folk art for which the community is traditionally known. The community of the artist has recognized him/her as master and teacher of his/her craft. Categories under GAMABA Award Folk architecture,, weaving, carving, performing arts, literature, ornament, textile art and other artistic expressions of traditional culture Pinili, Ilocos Norte She is known for her expertise in weaving high quality Ilocano textile called “abel” Started weaving at the age of 16 Mansalay Mindoro A Hanunuo Mangyan poet who is an advocate of preserving the traditional form of poetry of his tribe called “ambahan” Love and friendship Abra An Ilocano casque maker known for crafting high quality and functional headpiece called “tabungaw” Bukidnon Cultural Contribution He advocated the preservations of traditions in his regions by travelling from barangay to barangay to encourage indigenous groups to learn how to read and write Basilan An exemplary musician who is an expert in playing indigenous instrument called “kwintangankayu” (instrument with five wooden logs) Music produced in kwintangan kayu produces good harvest South Cotabato A t’nalak weaver from the indigenous community of T’boli T’nalak is a fabric made up of fine abaca fibers Tawi-tawi Cultural Contribution Upheld Sama women tradition of mat weaving with her own designs. Davao del Sur Cultural Contribution A traditional weaver since age twelve Recognized as the best weaver in her community (Bagobo)
