GAWAD SA MANLILIKHANG BAYAN By: Owen Salazar GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) O NATIONAL LIVING TREASURES AWARDS Awarded to citizens engaged in traditional art uniquely Filipino whose skills reached a level of artistic excellence. This award is given and administrated by the NCCA. R.A 7355 CATEGORIES Folk Architecture Graphic and Plastic Arts Maritime Ornaments Transports Textile/Fiber arts Weaving Pottery Carving Other expressions of Performing Arts traditional culture Literature CRITERIA FOR SELECTION Inhabitant of an indigenous community, that has preserved indigenous culture, beliefs, rituals, and traditions. He/She must have engaged in folk art tradition that has been in existence and documented for at least 50 years. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION He/She must have consistently performed or produced over a significant period, works of superior and distinctive quality. He/She must possess a mastery of tools and materials needed by the art, and must have an established reputation in the art as a master and maker of works of technical quality. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION He/She must have passed on/will pass on to other members of the community their skills in the folk art. HONORS AND PRIVILEGES Awardee receives a specially designed gold medallion, an initial grant of PhP 100,000 and a monthly stipend of PhP 10,000. The NCCA has also formulated guidelines on “inviting a GAMABA awardee” which states the benefits an awardee should receive whenever they are invited to an event. HONORS AND PRIVILEGES The presence of GAMABA awardees are required in the events under the institutional programs and projects of the NCCA. GAMABA AWARDEES GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Ginaw Bilog (1993) Poet, Hanunuo Mangyan. Panaytayan, Oriental Mindoro Preservation of ambahan. Poetic form composing of seven syllable lines used to convey metaphors. GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Masino Intaray (1993) Musician & Storyteller, Pala’wan Brookes Point, Palawan Mastery of musical instruments such as basal, kulilal, and bagit. Chants tultul (epics), sudsungit (narratives), and tuturan (myths of origin and teaching of ancestors). GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Samaon Sulaiman (1993) Musician, Maguindanao Mamasapano, Maguindanao Acclaimed kutyapi master. GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Lang Dulay (1998) Textile Weaver, T’boli Lake Sebu, South Cotabato Her textiles are judged “excellent”, due to the fine quality of the yarn and the weaving. GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Salinta Monon (1998) Textile Weaver, Tagabawa Bagobo Bansalan, Davao del Sur She has built a reputation for the quality of her work and the intricacies of her designs. There is continuing demand for her work. GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Alonzo Saclag (2000) Musician and Dancer, Kalinga Lubugan, Kalinga Kalinga master of dance and the performing arts whose mission is to create and nurture a greater conscience and appreciation of Kalinga culture. GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Federico Caballero (2000) Epic Chanter, Sulod-Bukidnon Calinog, Iloilo Federico works ceaselessly to preserve oral literature, particularly the epics of Labaw Dunggon and Humadapnon. Considered a Bantugan, a person with attained distinction. GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Uwang Ahadas (2000) Musician, Yakan Lamitan, Basilan A hands-on teacher to anyone interest in learning kwintangan, kayu, and tuntungan. GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Darhata Sawabi (2004) Textile Weaver, Tausug Parang, Sulu A Tausug weaver of pis syabit- the traditional cloth tapestry worn as a head cover. GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Eduardo Mutuc (2004) Textile Weaver, Tausug Apalit, Pampanga An artist dedicated to creating religious and secular art in silver, bronze, and wood. His works are in churches and private collections. GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Haja Amina Appi (2004) Mat Weaver, Sama Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi Recognized as a mat weaver among the Sama indigenous community for her unique designs, her tabig, her sasa, and kima-kima. GAWAD SA MANLILIKHA NG BAYAN (GAMABA) AWARDEES Magdalena Gamayo (2012) Textile Weaver, Ilocano Pinili, Ilocos Norte Weaver of inabel, an ilocano woven cloth, she exhibits her mastery and exceptional skill by producing Abel which is finer than the others.
