TEOFILO GARCIA a 2012 awardee is a farmer in the town of San Quintin, a municipality in Abra Province, better known for tending a plot of land filled with enlarged upo or gourd. Garcia transforms the harvested upo into durable hats protecting people, especially farmers exposed for long hours under the heat of the sun. TABUNGAW HAT WHAT IS GAMABA? The National Living Treasures Award, alternatively known as the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA; lit. 'Award for the Creators of the Country') It is conferred to a person or group of artists recognized by the Government of the Philippines for their contributions to the country's cultural heritage. SIGNIFICANCE OF GAMABA? To encourage the finest traditional artist to pursue to share their skills and continuously transfer it to others and to remain truthful to their art. It also motivates artists to develop their skills, works and ideas and to teach it to the young generations GAMABA also help the traditional work of artist to promote their craft both local and international. It is often used as blankets and clothing in royal wedding ceremonies on rare occasions. The Tboli weavers are often called “dream weavers” but this applies only to a few dedicated weavers. It is believed that Fu Dalu, the spirit of abaca, is bestowed on the designs and patterns through their dreams. A most complicated design technique, the pis syabit tapestry weaving of Tausug has no preset pattern sticks or pre-designed warp yarns into which the weaver inserts the desert yarn.
