Health What is it? Grade 10 Physical Education/Health Education How do you define Health? There are many different definitions of health. Health is the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living being. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health in its broader sense in 1946 as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Determinants of Health Health is maintained and improved not only through advancement of health science, but also through intelligent lifestyle choices by the individual and society. More specifically, key factors that have been found to influence whether people are healthy or unhealthy include: Income and social status Personal health practices Coping skills Social support networks Healthy child development Education and literacy Biology and genetics Employment/working conditions Health care services Social environments Gender Culture Physical environments The Health Triangle There are three major areas of health: l ca So ysi cia Ph l Mental Mental Health The World Health Organization defines mental health as: "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community". Social Health Social health involves the way you get along with others. It includes your ability to make and keep friends and to work and play in cooperative ways, seeking and lending support when necessary. It involves communicating well and showing respect and care for yourself and others. Physical Fitness Physical fitness is considered a measure of the body’s ability to function efficiently and effectively in work and leisure activities, to be healthy, to resist hypokinetic diseases, and to meet emergency situations. Physical fitness comprises two related concepts: 1. General fitness (a state of health and well-being) 2. Specific fitness (a task-oriented definition based on the ability to perform specific aspects of sports or occupations). Physical fitness is generally achieved through correct nutrition, exercise, and enough rest. Sedentary Lifestyle Sedentary lifestyle is a type of lifestyle with no or irregular physical activity. A person who lives a sedentary lifestyle may be known as a couch potato. It is commonly found in both the developed and developing world. Sedentary activities include sitting, reading, watching television, playing video games, and computer use for much of the day with little or no vigorous physical exercise. A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to many preventable causes of death. Health Effects of a Sedentary Lifestyle A lack of physical activity is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide. Sitting still may cause premature death. The risk is higher among those that sit still more than 4 hours per day. People that sit still more than 11 hours per day have a 40 percent higher risk than those that sit fewer than 4 hours per day. However those that exercise at least 5 hours per week are as healthy as those that sit fewer than 4 hours per day. A sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity can contribute to or be a risk factor for: Anxiety Diabetes Cardiovascular disease Colon cancer Depression High blood pressure Mortality in elderly men by 30% and Obesity double the risk in elderly women Osteoporosis Hypokinetic Disease Hypokinetic diseases are conditions that occur from a sedentary lifestyle. Examples could include obesity and complications arising from sedentary behaviour. Hypokinetic conditions could include: Cardiovascular Disease Some forms of Cancer Osteoporosis Back Problems Mental Illnesses (such as anxiety Obesity or depression) Type 2 Diabetes Hypokinetic conditions are the cause of 40% of back problems in the United States alone. Lifestyle Factors Experts have identified 10 habits that affect people's overall health, happiness and longevity. 1. Getting 8 - 10 hours of sleep each night 6. Avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs 2. Starting each day with a healthy breakfast 7. Avoiding high-risk sexual behaviours 3. Eating a variety of nutritious foods daily 8. Managing stress 4. Being physically active for at least 30 minutes a day 9. Maintaining positive relationships 5. Maintaining a healthy body weight 10. Practising safe behaviours to prevent injuries Influences on Your Health There are several important influences on your health. They include: Heredity Environment Media and Technology But most importantly… Your Values Attitude Behaviour Influences on Your Health Heredity - refers to all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents. Influences your general level of health. Environment - is the sum of your surroundings, including your family, your neighborhood, your school, your job, and your life experiences. Physical Environment - influences all aspects of health. Safe environment allows for enjoyment of physical, social and mental health. Factors like air pollution can affect health, pollens and dust can cause allergies. Social Environment - includes your family and other people you come into contact with each day. A supportive, caring environment contributes to positive health. Culture (Values)- refers to the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviours of a group. Influences on Your Health continued... Attitude - the way you view situations - your attitude - greatly affects the choices you make. Studies show that people who tend to see the positive in situations are more likely to have better health than those who see negatively. Behaviour - you greatly control your actions. You can lower your risk of developing disease by practicing healthy habits. Media - major influence on health. The various methods of communication to provide information to people plays a powerful role in shaping public opinion. Not all sources of information are accurate or reliable. Technology - technological advances also influence health. Medical advances have saved people and extended their lives. Advances help to keep our air and water clean. Technology has also replaced many physical activities from our lives, and gaming takes away from physical activity. Are you Healthy? After reviewing the information about health take some time to write about your own health. Include information about your physical, mental and social health. Provide reasoning and justification for the statements you provide. On a blank sheet of paper summarize all areas of your own health. Take some time and provide detailed thought and explanation. Reflect on your Physical, Mental and Social Health. Assignment This reflection should be approximately 1 page in length.
