Lesson 3: Components of Physical Education and Health in the Elementary Grades The Department of Education (DepEd) prescribed a curriculum that teachers must use as a guide on the topics that they need to teach primary school pupils. The curriculum includes different components that help teachers provide meaningful learning experiences in both physical education and health subjects. PE curriculum is activity- and standard-based, integrated, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate according to child’s level or grade. The curriculum has a learning area standard stating that pupil should demonstrate an understanding of the concept of physical fitness and physical activity in achieving, sustaining, and promoting an active life for fitness and health. PE is the most important subject to cultivate well-being behaviors associated with a healthy lifestyle during athletic practice and other types of active tasks. Psychological and social influences are critical in achieving optimum experiences for safe and active lifestyle. In teaching PE, it is necessary to have adequate facilities and equipment (gymnasium, covered court, facilities needed for sports, etc.) Student assessment is the gathering of evidence about pupil achievement and making inferences about pupil progress based on that evidence. It can include portfolios of checklists, rating scales, tangible pupil products, results of an observed demonstration of physical skills, and traditional constructed-response assessments. Each of the six components of health is somehow integrated, incorporating physical, social, cognitive, emotional, cultural, and spiritual health. Medical professionals, such as World Health Organization (WHO), agree that embracing the six components of health will allow patients to lead more complete lives.
