STAGE 5 Unit focus: The Titanic Text focus: Information Text Famous Passenger Boats The Titanic is one of the most famous passenger boats in history, and not just because of the tragedy that befell it on its maiden voyage. It was larger and more ornately decorated than any ship before it, and it was hailed as being “unsinkable”. Since then, there have been even more famous and out-sized passenger boats. The World Simply named The World, this boat is the pinnacle of luxury. Technically it is a residential ship, which means that people live on board for long periods of time. There are 165 individual “homes” on board owned by some of the wealthiest people in the world. Not only do they own their “home”, but they are in complete control of the ship. It continuously circumnavigates the globe stopping off at whatever far-flung and fantastic destinations the residents wish to visit. With “homes” starting from $4 million, it’s definitely one for the super-elite. But then, you do get access to the only at-sea full-sized tennis court, a 7,000 square foot spa and an exclusive wine collection. Symphony of the Seas The Symphony of the seas is one of the largest cruise ships in the world. It is owned and operated by Royal Caribbean International and set sail in 2018. There are 496 cabins inside the ship and a further 2,210 with access to the deck. It is manned by 2,394 crew members and weighs over 230,000 tonnes! In total, it can accommodate 5,400 passengers and a ticket will set you back anywhere from $1,200 per person, per week. For that price, you get access to four outdoor pools and its own spa! Prinzessin Victoria Luise The Prinzessin Victoria Luise was a German passenger ship built at the end of the 19th century. It first launched in 1900, just before the death of Queen Victoria, and carried passengers around until 1906 when it grounded off the coast of Jamaica. Whilst it wasn’t one of the largest ships ever built, it was the firstever ship designed to carry passengers on a tour of different countries; becoming the first cruise ship in history. Most of the early passengers were extremely wealthy, so PVL was designed to a very Rea e um http://www.literacyshedplus.com C u r r ic ul Th all resources ©2020 Literacy Shed A ding ro und high standard. In fact, it was more like a private yacht than a big ship. Each of the 120 cabins was classed as first-class and were all extremely luxurious. There was a library, a gym and a darkroom, which was needed to develop photographs before digital photography. In 1906, the captain became lost and mistook a lighthouse for one further along the coast. He hit a series of rocks and ran aground. All of the passengers were rescued. Azzam The Azzam is the world’s largest private yacht. It is classed as a superyacht due to its size and expense. It cost over $600 million to build and is currently owned by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. It was originally designed to be 145 meters long, but the plans changed during construction and it ended up being 180 meters from end to end. Unlike most yachts, which are designed only for comfort, this yacht was also designed to be quick in the water. It is big enough and has rooms for 36 guests and up to 80 crew members. The interior design is a closely guarded secret, and very few people have been fortunate to see what it looks like. Overall, it took over 4,000 people to build and has a pool, gym and golf training room! RETRIEVAL FOCUS 1. Which boat is the largest superyacht? 2.
