A. comforted C. pleased B. helped D. scared NOTING CONTEXT CLUES At the end of the lesson, I will be able to: 1. define context clues and identify its different types 2. determine the meaning of words and expression; and 3. appreciate the importance of Filipino culture  CONTEXT CLUES Context clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meaning of a new unfamiliar words. These are words that appear in sentences to help understand the meanings of difficult words.  Five Types of Context Clues Definition or restatement 1. Words and punctuation marks that signal a restatement or definition include: is, who is, which is, that is, in other words or dashes, commas, and parentheses. Example: The Philippines is considered a melting pot which is a place where people of different races, religion, beliefs, and tradition blend together as one. 2. Example A new word is related to a familiar word or words. The new word may be an example of a familiar term or the familiar term may be an example of the new word. Example: One of their trademarks is hospitality like welcoming the guests with a big smile and treating them warmly 3. Synonyms A word with a similar meaning to the new word is included in the context. Example: This diverse and varied culture makes Filipinos unique from the rest of the world. 4. Antonyms A word opposite in meaning to the new word appears in the same sentence or in one nearby. Often, the antonym appears in the same position in the sentence as does the new word. Example: Despite of the modern influence, they still retain their traditional practices. 5. Inferring Meaning Sometimes, even without specific clues, you can infer the meaning of the word through the other words in the context. Example: They don’t easily give up as resilience is one of their traits.
