7 ENGLISH QUARTER 4 – MODULE 1 ACADEMIC WRITING English 7 – Quarter 4 - Module 1 1 What I Need to Know Writing is a medium of human communication that involves the representation of a language with written symbols. As a learner, what you write is actually the product of the writer’s thoughts. It is the output of the ideas and brainstormed information we readers should know and appreciate. In this manner, it is very important to know and learn how to write effectively in a way our writing can persuade our readers or convince our audience to understand what we are talking about. The act of writing often clarifies our thoughts and writing in our own words is an act of creation. It shows how our minds and even our emotions being creative and resourceful of the ideas we wanted to present. When we write, originality is a must where our thoughts are of designing new empirical studies or of devising new theories. When we interpret or when we describe something using our own words, it shows our own uniqueness in writing showing our originality and critical evaluation. Even if we are critiquing someone else's work, we are interpreting it and selecting combinations of words which most closely convey its meaning to us. In addition, we may well evaluate, criticize, compare, analyze, predict, summarize, synthesize and apply all these skills on our part, and the conclusions we draw should be uniquely ours even if coincidentally shared by others. Therefore, in order to make writing more effective, we should know first the features or characteristics of academic writing. What I know Directions: Encircle the letter of the correct answer. 1. Persuasive and informative essays and research papers are examples of this. It is clear, concise, focused, structured and backed up by evidence. Its purpose is to aid readers understanding. It has a formal tone and style but it is not complex and does not require the use of long sentences and complicated vocabulary. Its objective is to inform rather than entertain. It is in the standard written form of the language. Academic writing is to some extent: complex, objective, specific, concise, and formal. It uses language precisely and accurately. It is also well organized and planned. Features of Academic Writing 1. Complex Written language is relatively more complex than spoken language. Written language has longer words, it is lexically denser and it has a more varied vocabulary. It uses more noun- based phrases than verb-based phrases. Written texts are shorter and the language has more grammatical complexity, including more subordinate clauses and more passives. 2. Objective Written language is in general objective rather than personal. It therefore has less words that refer to the writer or the reader. This means that the main emphasis should be on the information that you want to give and the arguments you want to make, rather than you. For that reason, academic writing tends to use nouns (and adjectives), rather than verbs (and adverbs). In general, avoid words like "I", "me", "myself". A reader will normally assume that any idea not referenced is your own. It is therefore unnecessary to make this explicit. Don't write:" In my opinion, this a very interesting study." Write: "This is a very interesting study." 3. Specific In academic writing, facts, information, dates and figures are given precisely. Do not use "a lot of people" when you can say "50 million people". Not Specific: Chemists had attempted to synthesize quinine for the previous hundred years but all they had achieved was to discover the extreme complexity of the problem. Specific: The volatile oily liquid beta-chloro-beta-ethyl sulphide was first synthesized in 1854, and in 1887 it was reported to produce blisters if it touched the skin. It was called mustard gas and was used at Ypres in 19I7. It caused many thousands of casualties. English 7 – Quarter 4 - Module 1 4 4. Concise Academic writing should be concise; that is, you should use no more words than necessary to convey your meaning clearly. Most of us use far more words than necessary in a first draft. Achieving concise writing usually requires several revisions. Statement: Any student prefers Modular Distance Learning due to the fact that they can review the lesson in the modules at any given place and time. Revised: Any student prefers Modular Distance Learning because he can review the lessons in modules at any given place and time. 5. Formal Academic writing is relatively formal. In general, this means that in an essay, you should avoid colloquial words and expressions. Avoid the following: a. colloquial words and expressions; ""stuff", "a lot of", "thing", "sort of", b. abbreviated forms: "can't", "doesn't", "shouldn't" c. two-word verbs: "put off", "bring up" d. sub-headings, numbering and bullet-points in formal essays - but use them in reports. e. asking questions. We use question tags a lot when we are talking to each other but they are not appropriate in formal written language. In formal situations, we need to structure questions in a different way. You’ve submitted the project, haven’t you? (Informal) Have you submitted the project? (Formal) What’s More Study this sample of academic writing and try to analyze the features. New COVID-19 variant: What we know so far Bonz Magsambol The world hasn’t contained the spread of COVID-19 that has, so far, infected over 85 million people globally, yet it faces a more contagious variant of the deadly virus. The new COVID-19 variant known as B117 was first detected in the United Kingdom in September. In November, around a quarter of the reported COVID-19 cases in the country were found to be of the new variant of the SARS-CoV2, the virus that causes COVID-19. English 7 – Quarter 4 - Module 1 5 Health experts have said that viruses naturally mutate. Scientists earlier said they observed minor mutations in the coronavirus that have not impacted its ability to spread or cause disease in any significant way. The BBC reported that the virus that was first detected in Wuhan, China, was not the same variant that was detected in most corners of the world. To date, experts have detected 12,706 mutations of SARS-CoV2. Of these, 398 strains of the novel coronavirus were found to have occurred repeatedly and independently. To understand what mutation means, Dr Celia Carlos of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) said that viruses, just like humans, undergo changes in their structure. "They multiply. Living organisms multiply and changes occur. In a normal rate, may changes which scientists called mutation. The changes or mutations can occur through alterations in its structure," Carlos explained in a virtual press briefing on December 27. ‘ ACTIVITY 1: Check Me Out! 1. CABATBAT Signature Teacher-Applicant In today's email-driven society, the need to write a formal letter rarely arises. However, it is still occasionally necessary to present a formal letter to obtain information, to apply for an academic program or a job, to write a complaint letter, or simply to express your opinion in an effective and coherent manner. Take note of some pointers that follow: 1. Be Concise. State the purpose of your formal letter in the first paragraph and don't veer from the subject. Try to avoid flowery language or long words. Keep the letter short and to the point. Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts. This does not mean that the writer makes all the sentences short or avoid all details and treat subjects in outline 2. Use an appropriate tone. A business or formal letter should be written in a tone that is slightly more formal than your everyday language. Avoid the following: slang or jargon; contractions such as I'm, can't, it's; and vague words such as good and nice. Be polite and respectful, even if you are complaining. Take a look at our formal letter example above to see what tone is appropriate. 3. Proofread Proofreading is so important. Once you have written your formal letter, check the grammar and spelling carefully. Use the spellchecker on your computer and then re- read the letter yourself, as the spellchecker will not catch every error. Use a dictionary, if necessary. Check the grammar and punctuation for correctness and make sure the sentences are complete. English 7 – Quarter 4 - Module 1 7 4. Use proper format and presentation. Remember that first impressions last. Use high-quality paper and a matching envelope for your formal letter. Make sure the recipient is addressed properly and that his or her name is spelled correctly. Equally important—don't forget to sign the letter! Check out our letter-writing e-book, which features several examples of formal letters. You can also search for free templates online. ACTIVITY 2: Apply Now! Write a Letter of Application. You would like to apply as a service crew in a food chain. Observe all the rules and parts in writing. Refer to the example provided on page 7. _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ ACTIVITY 3: Few Minutes to Read It! Academic documents always require a degree of formality to show how they are written. A formal tone is what determines the genre of your academic document. Being formal does not mean to be wordy and stuff your document with long sentences and words. What it means is to be clear, concise, and objective. Let’s get to know the degree of formality in the following sentences below. These texts differ in formality. One of the reasons for this difference is the different audiences they are targeting. Read the texts below carefully and then rank them from most formal (1), to most informal (3). ___ A. Why write essays? In the modern world our thinking is largely transmitted by speech and through radio and television. At the university, however, you are required to do much of your thinking through writing. In the Humanities and Social Sciences, you are inevitably required to produce a considerable number of essays. ____B. It's a real shame that something as simple as a diet was not taken account of by nurses, thus causing unnecessary pain to the patient. It probably caused even more pain to the patient's family and friends having to see their loved one die like that. How would we feel if we saw our own relative go through that experience? English 7 – Quarter 4 - Module 1 8 ____C. A major challenge in the national water plan is to determine the trade-offs between the costs of action (such as infrastructure improvements) designed to overcome water problems (such as too much water seepage and evaporation) with the public benefits (such as larger water flows downstream) of such actions.
