Sort and wash full loads of compatible garments. Adjust the water level to the size of the load. Select a wash cycle that matches the degree of soil. Determine water temperature needed by the degree of soil. Use a cold water rinse. Save energy by line drying whenever possible. Clean the lint filter before each load when using a dryer. Check the vent system regularly to avoid obstructions that will slow the airflow in a dryer. Avoid overloading the dryer. Remove clothes from the dryer promptly to prevent wrinkling and unnecessary ironing. Remove clothes while slightly damp to allow air drying. ▶ Dry consecutive loads of wash to use residual heat left from the preceding load. ▶ Plan to iron as many items as possible when you heat the iron to take advantage of the energy required for heating. ▶ Sort items to be ironed or pressed temperature to avoid heating or cooling the iron between garments. Laundry Terms to Know ▶ Laundering: the process of washing clothes using water and bleach, detergents and soaps. ▶ Clothes last longer and look better when they are taken care of properly. To get the most longevity out of your clothes, follow the manufacturer’s suggested methods of care. ▶ Dry Cleaning: a method of cleaning without water. ▶ When a label says “Dry Cleaned”, it means the garment should not be washed in water. It is a good idea to take the garment to a Dry Cleaning Facility. ▶ Bleaches: cleaning agents, but cannot be used as soaps or detergents. ▶ Softeners: non-woven sheets used in the dryer to reduce clinging. ▶ Ironing: to slide the iron back and forth. ▶ Pressing: to lift and lower the iron over portions of the garment. ▶ Soap: reacts with the minerals in hard water to form white cloudy curds that float throughout the water. ▶ – These curds cling to fabrics, making whites look dingy and colours look dull. ▶ – Soaps work best in soft or softened water. ▶ Detergents: work well in hard or soft water. – For a whiter, brighter wash, use detergent rather ▶ than soap with hard water. ▶ – Detergents may be either high-sudsing or low- sudsing. ▶ – Detergents come in both liquid and powder forms. ▶ Water Softeners: neutralize the calcium and magnesium ions that are found in hard water. This keeps dulling residue from settling on your clothes. (Look for a ring after water has left.) ▶ Fabric Softeners: make fabrics soft and fluffy. They help reduce wrinkling and control static electricity.
