REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES BICOL UNIVERSITY POLANGUI NURSING DEPARTMENT Polangui, Albay ISO 9001: 2015 SOCOTEC SCP000722Q Email: [email protected] GEC 11: Understanding the Self 1st Semester, SY2024-2025 The Digital Self Introduction: Digital self is one of the aspects of the self that is expressed and shared with others through online engagements on the internet specifically on the different social networking sites. The users usually disclose personal information as their names, age, birthday, address, contact details and other information. This sharing of personal information that is shared on social networking sites may be related to the strong desire of adolescents for approval and acceptance. The social media are websites and applications that make it easier for some people to create and share information, ideas, and interests. This allows people to created other forms of self-expression via virtual communities and networks. The feelings of an inner self and outer self-generate the impulse to reveal oneself to others in a believable manner. As per Lionel Trille’s, analysis of literature about the “self” and its relationship with other distinguished sincerity and authenticity. Sincerity: exposure in public of what one feels privately Authentic person: one who takes action based on some internal standard and take responsibility for this freely chosen action. The social world of western-influenced society, like the Philippines, typically consists of 4 domains: 1. Family 2. School 3. Neighborhood 4. Online life I, Me, Myself and my User ID and Identify Characteristics of Digital Self: a. Oriental inward: world of thoughts and feelings because others cannot see the online user’s overt attributes b. Narrative in nature: will only come to know the person primarily through what that person tells them c. Multipliable: people can interact with one another in different domains of the online world at relatively the same time Self-presentation: this refers to an individual’s attempts, both conscious and unconscious, to control how he/she projects him/herself in social interactions. It is the behavior intended to create, modify or maintain an impression in the mind of others. The basic kinds of people you interact with online are: 1. People you do not know at all 2. People you know both online and offline 3. People you know only online In the online line social domain, it is entirely acceptable to contact and to be contacted by complete strangers. Selective Self-Presentation and Impression Management Why do people engage in self-presentation? Self-presentation: - Helps facilitate social interaction - Enables individuals to attain material and social rewards - Helps people privately construct desired identities Generally social media platforms are used for: - Social browsing - Social searching - Communication - Impression management Impressions management: attempt ot control of influence any other people’s perceptions Two main motives to manage impression of others: 1. Instrumental: motive to basically gain rewards and increase one’s self esteem 2. Hyperpersonal model. (interpersonal communication theory) The advantage of computer-mediated communication is that a person can edit his or her self-presentation, which in turn positively impacts impressions on the self-; thus greater intimacy is possible Social networking was also found addictive. It is supported primarily by the mental preoccupation of chronic social networking users who as a result tend to neglect other aspects of their social functioning such as family and offline friends What makes us so addicted? The social world is socially constructed through interactions between people: - Roles - Rules - Categorizations - Stereotypes Social networks have the power to amplify this human nature. They have broken barriers of distance and time, of presence and visibility. They expand the possibilities of sharing and playing identities. They fulfill the most deeply felt human need of finding a psychological distinctiveness and self-definition in a social context. Private vs. Public Self Private. Mental events in a person that are inherently unobservable by others Public. Concept you develop about yourself that evolves over the course of your life. This may include aspects of your life that you have no control over, such as where you grew up or the color of your skin, as well as choices you make in life, such as how you spend your time and what you believe in. Characteristics of personal identity: - Emphasis is on the individual - Created through differences in personal characteristics when comparing the self with others Social Identity. (Henri Tajfel and John Turner theory). A person’s snese of who he/she is based on group membership. Characteristics: - Characteristics is on what the person has in common with the members of hir/her group - It is created based on similarities with others Gender and sexuality online Stereotype. Fixed or generalized belief about a particular group or class of people. - Assuming that the characteristics and abilities of one person is also present in all members of the group - Leads to social categorization, which is one of the reasons for prejudice attitudes The development of sexuality is an important bio-psycho-social development. During adolescence, major biological, as well as psychological developments take place. The myriads of changes that occur in adolescents put them under enormous stress, which may have adverse physical and psychological consequences. Hormones 2. Personality or temperament 3. Social or environmental factors 4. Media and the internet Social environmental factors that facilitate sexual learning and decide the sexual attitude of the adolescent include? - Attitude of parents toward sexuality - Parenting style - Peer relationship - Cultural influences ACTIVITY: 1. Creative work. Group yourselves into 4 members. In an illustration board, make a slogan of poster about becoming a responsible internet user. Use coloring materials to improve your output, share to the class the output and record comments/reactions of your classmates. 2. Research work. (done individuals to be handwritten in yellow pad) Search either from the library (journals, books and other reading materials) and in any internet sources/social media for the guidelines used in identifying fake news.
