Cognitive Development in Middle Childhood Subject Learning Obj. Introduction Cognitive & Physical Development in Middle Childhood Introduction In the Concrete Operational Stage: 7 - 11 Years Old Children continue into elementary school; they develop the ability to represent ideas and events more flexibly and logically. Children at this age understand concepts such as past, present, and future, giving them the ability to plan and work toward goals. Additionally, they can process complex ideas such as addition and subtraction and cause-and-effect relationships. This involves mastering the use of logic in concrete ways. The child can use logic to solve problems tied to their own direct experience but has trouble solving hypothetical problems or considering more abstract problems. The child uses inductive reasoning, which is a logical process in which multiple premises believed to be true are combined to obtain a specific conclusion. Subject Learnin Obj. Introduction Cognitive & Physical Development in Middle Childhood Introduction Metacognition Refers to the knowledge we have about our own thinking and our ability to use this awareness to regulate our own cognitive processes. Children in this developmental stage also have a better understanding of how well they are performing a task, and the level of difficulty of a task. Subject Learning Obj. Language Development Vocabulary: One of the reasons that children can classify objects in so many ways is that they have acquired a vocabulary to do so. Grammar and Flexibility: Older children are also able to learn new rules of grammar with more flexibility. Typically, a child will gain about 5-7 pounds a year and grow about 2 inches per year. Many girls and boys experience a prepubescent growth, but this growth tends to happen earlier in girls (around age 9-10) than it does in boys (around age 11-12). Because of this, girls are often taller than boys at the end of middle childhood. Children in middle childhood tend to slim down and gain muscle strength and lung capacity making it possible to engage in strenuous physical activity for long periods of time.
