Definition of Terms and Citation Styles BY GROUP 5 Definition of Terms Definition of terms in a research paper refers to the clarification and explanation of key concepts, terms, and terminology used in the study. It helps readers understand the specific meanings and context of these terms within the research. Definition of Terms Definition of terms is usually an annex to a work (book, research paper, pamphlet, etc.) either the beginning or more likely near the end with a list of acronyms, jargons, credits, etc. This is an important part of research paper or report is that in which the key or important terms in the study are clearly defined. Definition of Terms Why do we need a definition of terms in research? We need it to ensures that your readers will understand the components of your study in the way that you will be presenting them, because often your readers may have their own understanding of the terms, or not be familiar with them at all. TYPES AND FUNCTIONS CONCEPTUAL Conceptual definition is the universal meaning that is attributed to a word or group of words and which is understood by many people. It is abstract and most general in nature. The usual source of conceptual definition is the DICTIONARY which is the reference book of everyday language OPERATIONAL Is the meaning of the concept or term as used in a particular study. Unlike the conceptual definition, it is stated in concrete term in that it allows measurement. Also known as functional definition. It refers to a detailed explanation of the technical terms and measurements used during data collection. TWO FORMS OF OPERATIONAL DEFINITION: Measured Operational Definition Experimental Operational Definition MEASURED States the way the concept is measured in the investigation EXPERIMENTAL The researchers may spell out the details of the manipulation of a variable. FUNCTIONS It establishes the rules and procedures the investigators will use to measure variables. It provides unambiguous meaning to terms that otherwise can be interpreted in different ways. EXAMPLE Consider a study requiring water temperature to be measured. An operational definition would explain how the temperature is measured: the thermometer type, how the thermometer was positioned, how long was it left in the water, and so on. In contrast, a conceptual definition might describe the scientific definition of temperature. EXAMPLE: CITATION STYLES CITATION STYLES A citation style is a set of guidelines on how to cite sources in your academic writing. You always need a citation whenever you quote, paraphrase, or summarize a source to avoid plagiarism. How you present these citations depends on the style you follow. American Psychological Association(APA) APA is the style of documentation of sources used by the American Psychological Association. This form of writing research papers is used mainly in the social sciences, like psychology, anthropology, sociology, as well as education and other fields. American Psychological Association(APA) uses the author/date method of citation in which the author's last name and the year of the publication are inserted in the actual text of the paper. American Psychological Association(APA) EXAMPLE: CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE -is a style guide for American English published since 1906 by the University of Chicago Press. EXAMPLE Einstein, Albert. 1923. The Meaning of Relativity. Princeton: Princeton University Press. MODERN LANGUAGE ASSOCIATION Modern Language Association, or MLA, format is a style of crediting sources you use to write a paper. This style is typically used for research papers for English Composition and other communication classes. EXAMPLE Baron, Dennis. What's Your Pronoun? Beyond He & She. Liveright, 2020. COUNCIL OF SCIENCE EDITOR this citation style was formerly referred to as CBE, after the Council of Biology Editors (prior to their change of name in 1999). CSE formatting is used almost exclusively for scientific papers. ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS a numbered referencing style that uses citation numbers in the text of the paper, provided in square brackets. A full corresponding reference is listed at the end of the paper, next to the respective citation number.
