Once ceases to be human if one is not humane (Enriquez, 1994) Shared Identity If we are able to recognize each one of us as “kapwa-tao” —> then we are able to have a “shared identity” Ang sarili (self) at ang iba (others) hangga't maaari ay hindi magkaiba/ Magkahiwalay Paano tayo magkapareho eh magkaiba nga tayo? —> There is a sense of sameness within us, that we both shares within ourselves, even though it doesn’t totally mean that we are totally the same! This derogatory statement is an example of DEHUMANIZATION Dehumanization Referrers to denying humanity in another person (Haslam, 2006) Stripping off of one’s humanity PagmuMURA (Hornedo, 1997) Mura - Mababa yung value Pagmumura sa ibang tao - You degrade/ ibinababa mo yung value nila Mga Mura Shit/ Tae = Waste products Pareho tayo, kasi pareho tayong tao! The level of interactions based on program —-> will determine the Takeaway: degree of closeness and sharedess w/partners —-> will influence the To have a sense of kapwa is to acknowledge the other as a (1) degree of service, (2) view of self & others, and (3) view of response fellow human being to social issues But why is it important? Treat the other as kapwa-tao (fellow human being) —-> if you considered them as kapwa, you will treat them as if you are treating yourself, as a decent human being Possible BEHAVIORS associated w/ pakikipagkapwa-tao Taking the perspective of others Respecting dignity of others Treating the other as co-equal Avoiding harm Behaviors that are antithesis of dehumanization How is this related to your NSTP experience? Your NSTP project aims to activate this sense of KAPWA. It is a relationship-building project w/the aim of increasing the level of sharedness with those we consider OTHERS. NSTP is an invitation to become a social change agent through allyship A member of the dominant group or majority group who works to end oppression in their personal or professional life through support of, and as an advocate for, the oppressed population Transcribed by: Samantha Nicole A. When we understand our relationship with others, we become more sensitive on how best to work with them. Ideally, we are aiming for NSTP to be a transformative experience —> for you, but a more so for your community partners 1.) HIGH (Degree of sharedness & closeness) = HIGH (pakikisangkot sa komunidad) a.) You are a PARTNER for change, because you act w/your community as ONE, you see them as close and similar to you that you don’t distance yourself from them, you see the process of PAKIKISANGKOT to the community not as a burden, but as personally important for you as well. b.) Sila yung may alam ng problema AND you work for them and help them; c.) Considering now that you know them so well, you learned how to relate and emphatize to them —> hindi mo nalang ginagawa yung isang bagay for the sake of “helping them” or “ayan may naitulong na ko” Understanding the SELF in relation to OTHERS We are all humans & thus, we know how it feels to be treated humanely.
