Java - Court Ceremonies Bali- Sacred Ceremonies Instruments Metallophone - Consist of tuned metal bars that are struck to make a sound, usually with a mallet. Kedang - Two headed, hand-played drum used in Gamelan Ensembles. Gongs - Percussion instruments that have a unique, bowl-like appearance and a round knob on the center. Suling - Also known as Seruling, Indonesian bamboo ring flute. Bonang - Collection of small gongs, placed horizontally onto strings in a wooden frame. Piphat Ensemble (Thailand) - Made up of wind and percussion instruments, is a mid-sized orchestra. - Performs in funerals, cremation ceremonies, traditional dance drama, and shadow puppetry. Instruments Pi nai - Has 6 holes and 22 pitches, is a form of oboe. Ranat Ek - Consists of 21 wooden bars suspended by cords over a boat-shaped trough resonator. ( struck by two mallets ). Khong Wong - Gong circle used in Thai classical music, has 18 tuned bossed gongs. Taphon - Most commonly used drum in Thai folk music. Klong that - Drum that provides rhythm in Piphat Ensemble, similar to skor thom of Cambodia. Ching - Finger cymbals played in Cambodian and Thai Theater. Pinpeat Ensemble (Cambodia) - Cambodian musical ensemble, accompanied by ceremonial music of the royal court and temples. ( Analogous to Piphat Ensemble ) Instruments Skor Thom - Two big drums, played with drumsticks. Samphor - A double-headed drum played with hands. Oneat - Xylophone Kongvong - Gong circles Chhing - Finger cymbals Khloy - 8 or 9 finger holes and has a duct end, traditional bamboo flute of Cambodia. Saung Ensemble (Myanmar) - An arched harp, known as the national musical Burmese instrument. - Made of Padauk, the famous Myanmar Mahogany and strings are made of silk. (also used female deer’s leather) ARTS Fabric and Designs Thailand: Thai Silk - Produced from cocoons of Thai silk worms, mainly produced in Khorat ( center of silk industry ). - Raised the silk worms with Mulberry leaves. Cambodia: Silk Weaving - Dates to as early as the first century since textiles were used for trading. Ikat Technique - To create patterns, weavers tie and dye portions of weft yarn before weaving begins. Uneven Twill - Yields single or two colored fabrics which are produced by weaving three threads. Laos: Sihn - Lao women’s ankle long skirt whose form is undeniable but whose patterns are unique to each skirt. Vietnam: Golden Thread Silks - Born in Vietnam Ha dong - Where Vietnamese fabrics originated. Sericulture - Silk Worm Production. Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore: Batik - Most common fabric of both countries. - Related to the Malay word “titik” meaning ‘point’, ‘dot’, and ‘drop’. HandPainted BlockPrinted Brunei: Batik - Also Brunei’s traditional textile but is uniquely different. - Designs their national flower: simpur, and sumboi-sumboi and Brunei’s traditional design of Air muleh. Arts and Crafts Thailand: Flying Lanterns - Made out of rice paper with a bamboo frame. Cambodia - Textiles, baskets, jars, pottery and other tools. Laos - Made paper by hand using local bark SA or Mulberry tree. Vietnam: Silk Painting - One of the most popular forms of art in Vietnam. ( uses Vietnamese silk ) Indonesia: Shadow puppetry - Wayang Kulit, a type of puppetry shadow play performed around indo-malayan archipelago. Malaysia: Wau Kite - Uniquely designed Malaysian kite called “Wau”. Brunei: Songkok/Peci/Kopiah - A cap widely worn in Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore. Sculpture Cambodia: Angkor Wat - One of the country’s most cherished art forms with breathtaking carvings. Thailand: Thai Bronzes - Famous sculpture in Wat Pho, Bangkok. It’s 46 meters long and 15 meters high. - Plaster in core, finished in gold leaf. Laos: Phra Say - Most famous statue made of gold. Vietnam: Dong Noi Cave - Famous for its kettledrums, small carvings, and home utensils. Mourning Houses - Erected to honor the death of the Gia Rai and Ba Na ethnic groups. ( Symbolized by statues. ) Indonesia: Borobudur in central Java - Hundreds of stone buddhas. Malaysia: Relief Sculpture - Practiced by artists and architects, done with stone, marble, bronze etc. Singapore: Sri Mariammam Hindu Temple - Dedicated to goddess Mariamman who is worshiped for her power to cure disease. The Merlion - Was conceived due to the country's lack of a distinct image of representing the nation and its history. Brunei - Sculpture in Brunei takes on a more utilitarian role than an aesthetic one. HEALTH Sexuality - Is everything about being a male or a female. Gender - Refers to the femininity or masculinity of a persons’ role and behavior as defined by society. Biological Sex - attributes such as anatomy, chromosomes, and hormones that are usually assigned at birth. Gender Identity - An individual’s internal sense of being a man and a woman. - is complex; it exists on multiple continuums, which together encompass infinite variability and possibility. - Gender Identity, Sexual Orientation and Romantic Orientation are three integral components of sexual identity. Gender Expression - The ways in which a person manifests masculinity, femininity, both, or neither. Romantic Orientation - Who you are romantically attracted to, meaning wanting to be in a romantic relationship. Sexual Orientation - Who you are sexually attracted to. Dimensions of Human Sexuality - Biological Dimension - Psychological Dimension - Sociocultural Dimension Sexual Health - Sexual Health concerns are life situations that can be addressed through education about sexuality and society-wide actions in order to promote the sexual health of individuals. Sexual Behavior - Is a process by which humans and other animals demonstrate and/or express sexuality. Sexual Health Concerns - related to body integrity and to sexual safety. - related to gender. - related to emotional attachment. - related to reproduction.
