And THEN you put the whole source with idk link and title in the footnote. BE REALLY REALLY REALLY CAREFUL WITH PLAGIARISM. It opens on October 1^st^ and the deadline is November 15th. Class : Booklet: City Upon a Hill page 8 1. Who was John Winthrop? - John Winthrop was the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony, reelected 12 times (1631-1648). He settled Boston, which became the capital and main port. He was a lawyer. 2. How can you tell this is an old document? - The age of the document is betrayed by the spelling (double letters and additional "e") 3. What type of document is this? - This is a primary source, a lay sermon. 4. Where did Winthrop write it? - It was written aboard the ship Arabella, which took Winthrop to the "New World". 5. Which document does he repeatedly quote? Where in the text? - He quotes passages of the Bible: Matthew "you are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden"; the prophetic book of Micah; Deuteronomy "the land covenant"; the Exodus (Moses and the 10 commandments). 6. What themes does he develop? Explain the title. - The title refers to the theme of exemplarity. The colony will be a model for others to follow. He also insists on unity morality (good versus evil), and predestination, that is to say (i. e.) the fate of each individual is determined at birth and success is a sign of God's favor. 7. What does this tell you about the state of mind of the first colonists? - These first immigrants put their fate in the hands of God, afraid of what they would find but relying on their faith to protect them. If they succeeded, it meant that this conquest was their destiny (this belief would later be the basis of the doctrine of "Manifest Destiny") Mercantilism: The wealth of a nation depends on its possession of precious metals such as gold and silver, so a government must, maximize trade, develop a merchant navy; and an empire; the colonies are meant to enrich mother country. New Netherlands was founded by the Dutch West India Company in 1623. Dutch built one of their settlements on the land token to the Manhattans.
