Computer Graphics CHAPTER 5 Table of content: What is Multimedia? Element of Multimedia What is Graphics? Types of Graphics? Interaction Multimedia Linear VS Non-Linear Authoring Tools Importance of Multimedia Multimedia Product Table of content: 2D Animations 3D Animations Differentiate between 2D Animation and 3D Animation What is Multimedia? Derived from the word “Multi” and “Media” Multi Many, Multiple, Media Distribution tool & information presentation – text, graphic, voice, images, music and etc. Multimedia media that uses multiple form of information content and information presentation. Definition of Multimedia Multimedia is a combination of text, graphic, audio, animation, and video that is delivered interactively to the user by electronic or digitally manipulated means. GRAPHIC TEXT VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT TEXT VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Text is the most basic element of multimedia that contains words used for written communication or to express something. Used to create words, sentences, and paragraphs. A good choice of words could help convey the intended message to the users (keywords). Used in contents, menus, navigational buttons Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT TEXT VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Text elements can be categories into: Alphabets characters: A – Z Number: 0 – 9 Special characters:. , ; : „ “ Symbols: @ # $ & * Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT TEXT VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION The uses of Text: Title/ Heading Captions Label for pictures Contents Menus Navigational buttons Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT TEXT VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Font A collection of characters of a single size & style belonging to a particular type. e.g. 24 point Times New Roman Font Styles Bold, Italic and Underline Alignment Alignment can be left, right, centered, or justified Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT TEXT VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Example Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT GRAPHIC VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION A digital representation of non-text information, such as a drawing, chart, or photograph. To convey messages as it serves the purpose to present information more attractively & effectively. Used in multimedia to show more clearly what a particular information is all about (diagrams, picture). Computer graphics are simply images displayed on a computer screen. Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT GRAPHIC VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Graphic can be used as: Main focus: logos, images, painting, figures & photographs. Object: icons, symbols, drawing. Interface To explain concepts and present background information Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT GRAPHIC VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION The advantages use graphic in multimedia: Convey information more quickly than when using text Make complex information simple Enhance online teaching and learning Enhance communication with some disabled groups, particularly those with learning difficulties or cognitive impairments Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT GRAPHIC VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION A Picture means a thousand words Example Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT GRAPHIC VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Example Pictures of people, places, artwork & photographs, diagram of buildings and equipment, charts and graphs, curves, backgrounds and 3D photo. Types of Graphics Two types of graphics : 1)Vector graphics or Draw-type graphics – represent an image as a geometric shape 2)Bitmap graphics – represents the image as an array of dots, called pixels. Draw Type/Vector Graphics File size smaller than bitmap Images created with software that uses geometrical formulas to represent images. Consist of line drawings include items such as lines, rectangles, polygon, ellipses, arcs, curves and etc. Can be created using any drawing software, eg:Illustrator. Draw Type/Vector Graphics Example Bitmap Graphics Bitmap graphics are also called raster graphics Bitmaps – array of dots or pixels High quality pictures photo realistic file size larger than vector graphic A bitmap is a data matrix describing the individual dots of an image. Bitmap images are real images that can be captured from devices such as digital cameras or scanners. Bitmap Graphics Example Types of Graphics Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT AUDIO VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Produced by vibration, as perceived by the sense of hearing. Audio is the best way to attract attention. Audio provides effective way to convey an idea, elicit an emotion, or dramatize point. Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT AUDIO VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION In multimedia, audio could come in the form of speech and music. Speech : Narration, instruction, etc Music : Background, Sound effect Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT AUDIO VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Example Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT ANIMATION VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Animation is a process of making a static image look like it is moving. A series of graphical images displayed one after another to simulate movement. It is a series of graphics that create an illusion of motion. In multimedia, animation is used to further enhance / enriched the experience of the user to further understand the information conveyed to them. Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT ANIMATION VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Example Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT ANIMATION VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Animation serves the purpose to make static presentation come alive, and to present complex concept more briefly and easily. Two categories of animation: 2D (Two dimension) animation 3D (Three dimension) animation 2D Animations What is 2D Animation? 2D Animation is an acronym for two dimensional. 2D animation is a flat animation and all the motions happen in the x-y axes of the screen. 2D animations are very simple and static, not changing their position on the screen. Pictures can be seen from one angle at the moment. Traditional 2D animation was hand-drawn, but it can now also be computer generated. Example 2D Animation in Malaysia Anak-Anak Sidek Putih (2001) (1999 – 2003) Example 2D Animation in Malaysia Kampung Boy (1997) Keluang Man (1998) Example 2D Animation in Malaysia Usop Sontorian (1996 - 1997) 3D Animation What is 3D Animation ? 3D Animation is an acronym for three dimensional. 3D animation allows an image or object to be created from every possible direction like in real life and motions are calculated along all three axes (x, y, & z) of the screen. 3D Animation What is 3D Animation ? 3D animation digital models manipulated by an animator. It enables animators to create environments, characters, and objects that appear more realistic than 2D animation. 3D Animation(Cont.) These techniques are use in 3D graphic: Cel-shaded animation: Celshading involves creating a shader that mimics the look of traditional hand-drawn animation, with hard edges and flat areas of color. 3D Animation(Cont.) These techniques are use in 3D graphic: Morph target animation: A "morph target" is a modified shape. For example, when applied to a human face, the head is first modeled with a neutral expression, then "target deformations" are created for each of the other expressions. A way to modify a mesh with more control than bone- based skeletal animation. 3D Animation(Cont.) These techniques are use in 3D graphic: Skeletal animation: represented in two parts, which is a surface representation used to draw the character and a hierarchical set of interconnected parts. 3D Animation(Cont.) These techniques are use in 3D graphic: Motion capture: Motion capture, also called performance capture or mo-cap, is a technology that blends real life and animation, allowing you to film someone live and transfer them into computerized form. Example of 3D Animation in Malaysia BOBOIBOY Movie Didi & Friends Example of 3D Animation in Malaysia UPIN & IPIN THE MOVIE EJEN ALI 2D Animation and 3D Animation 2D Animation is a flat animation and comprises only X axis and Y axis. 3D animation comprises of the X axis, Y axis and Z axis. X, Y and Z refer to height, width and depth respectively. 2D animation works on onion tool kits. 3D animation uses digital modeling and rendering. 2D Animation and 3D Animation(Cont.) Realistic Appeal 2D animation consists of frames and carries no realistic feather in them whereas 3D animation comprises of movements and carries realistic appeal in them. 3D technology enables the use of lighting and textures that can be used to create better stable images and can be merged into vital video components. 2D Animation and 3D Animation(Cont.) 3D animation can be more realistic, but it can also be more expensive and time- consuming to produce due to the reliance on software. 2D animation is often cheaper and quicker to produce than 3D animation. 2D Animation and 3D Animation(Cont.) 2D Animation and 3D Animation(Cont.) Snow white 2D Animation and 3D Animation(Cont.) Cinderella 2D Animation and 3D Animation(Cont.) Tangled Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT VIDEO VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION The term video refers to the moving picture, accompanied by sound such as a picture in television. Video is more towards photo realistic image sequence / live recording as in comparison to animation. Video also takes a lot of storage space. So plan carefully before you are going to use it. Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT VIDEO VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION Promoting television shows, films, or other non-computer media that traditionally have used trailers in their advertising. Giving users an impression of a speaker’s personality. Showing things that move. For example: Product demos of physical products are also well suited for video. Elements of Multimedia GRAPHIC TEXT VIDEO VIDEO AUDIO ANIMATION A powerful tool for bringing computer users closer to real world, attract the user’s attention and emotions. Can film footage using video camera. Authoring Tools Use to merge multimedia elements (text, audio, graphic, animation, video) into a project. Designed to manage individual multimedia elements and provide user interaction (if required). Example Tool use in 2D Animation and 3D Animation: 1. Adobe After Effects, Adobe Flash Professional, Motion, Toon Boom, and Anime Studio are some of the commonly used software used to create 2D animation. 2. Autodesk 3Ds Max, Autodesk Maya, Cinema 4D, ZBrush, and Blender are some of the commonly used software used to create 3D animation. Authoring Tools Example: Macromedia Authorware Macromedia Director Macromedia Flash Microsoft Power Point Types of multimedia presentation Two types of multimedia presentation: LINEAR NON-LINEAR Linear VS Non-Linear LINEAR A Multimedia Project is identified as Linear when: It is not interactive User have no control over the content that is being showed to them. Example: A movie A non-interactive lecture / demo show Linear VS Non-Linear NON-LINEAR A Multimedia Project is identified as Non-Linear when: It is interactive Users have control over the content that is being showed to them. Users are given navigational control Example: Games Courseware Interactive CD Interactive Multimedia When the user is given the option of controlling the elements. Hyper Media It is non-linear computer-based experience that have combination of hypertext, plain text, graphics, audio, video, and hyperlinks. Interactive Multimedia Hypertext A simple text that contains a link which redirects the user to somewhere else on the computer network. Associated with keywords and usually represented with blue type. Interactive Multimedia Hyperlinks A link (URL) that allows users to navigate between difference computer resources like webpages. Contain all types of media such as animations, videos, graphics, pictures. Example World Wide Web (WWW) Microsoft Office Example Hyper Text and Hyper Media Main Page 1. Video link 2. Image link 3. Audio Link Multimedia Products There are a number of fields where multimedia could be of use. Examples are:- Business School/Education Entertainment Public Places Multimedia Products Business Small, straightforward, linear products used to present information quickly and concisely.
