Medical Terminology Code (3401 ) Cardiovascular System Objectives Identify, pronounce, spell, and build words related to the cardiovascular system. The cardiovascular (CV) system is composed of the heart and blood vessels. The heart is located between the lungs, with its apex directed toward the left. The heart wall is divided into three layers: Epicardium Myocardium Endocardium Epicardium is the outer protective layer of the heart wall Myocardium is the muscular thick middle layer wall of the heart. It is composed of cardiac muscle fibers, which enable heart contractions. Endocardium is the thin inner layer of the heart wall, this layer lines the inner heart chambers and covers heart valves Pericardium is the fibrous sac that surrounds the heart. The vascular system consists of: 1. Arteries, the vessels that carry blood away from the heart. Arterioles are small arteries that lead into the capillaries. 2. Capillaries, the smallest vessels, through which exchanges take place between the blood and the tissues. 3. Veins carry blood back to the heart. The small veins that receive blood from capillaries and drain into the veins are venules.
