BOMBARDIER DHC 8-400 (PWC PW150) LIGHTING - EMERGENCY LIGHTING BLOCK DIAGRAM BOMBARDIER DHC 8-400 (PWC PW150) LIGHTING SYSTEMS GENERAL DESCRIPTION CONTINUED provide adequate illumination during normal operation for the crew, passengers, ground personnel, and aircraft identification. The exterior lights are controlled by switches in the flight compartment. NOTE: The lighting system has the sub-systems that follow: • • • • • Flight Compartment Lights Passenger Compartment Lights Baggage and Service Compartment Lights Exterior Lights Emergency Lights The egress lights are part of the emergency lighting system and is controlled by that system. EMERGENCY LIGHTS FLIGHT COMPARTMENT LIGHTS The emergency lights system supplies interior and exterior lighting for emergency evacuation of the aircraft, or if there is a failure of the DC power system. The flight compartment lights supply sufficient illumination for the instruments, panels and other areas of the flight compartment to ensure the safe operation of the aircraft. Fixed exterior emergency egress lights are located at the left and right aft emergency exits, the front right emergency exit and the forward passenger door. PASSENGER COMPARTMENT LIGHTS Emergency lights in the passenger compartment include: The passenger compartment lights supply the general lighting requirements of the passengers and crew in the passenger compartment area. They supply adequate lighting for in boarding and deplaning the aircraft as well as illuminating the aircraft interior. They also supply reading lights and information signs for the passengers. BAGGAGE AND SERVICE COMPARTMENT LIGHTS The forward and aft baggage compartments and service compartment lights supply general lighting for the baggage and service compartment areas. The forward baggage compartment light comes ON by either opening the forward baggage compartment door, or the internal baggage access door. The aft baggage compartment lights come ON when the door is opened. EXTERIOR LIGHTS The aircraft is equipped with a series of external lights installed at various locations on the fuselage, wings, empennage, engine cowlings, and landing gear. The lights • • • Seven Emergency Ceiling Lights Emergency Escape Path Lights Emergency Identifiers and Markers All emergency lights, except emergency path lights, are powered by four 6.4V DC Ni-Cad battery packs. Flight compartment lighting is supplied by the lights that follow: • • • • • • • Panel and instrument lights Circuit breaker panel lights Dome lights Thunderstorm lights Map lights Utility lights - Pilot/Copilot and Observer reading lights Windshield wiper ice detection lights The flight compartment lights are controlled by: • • • Overhead lighting panel switches Side console switches Switches adjacent to the light source The flight compartment lights function independently, with individual lighting overlapping critical areas of operation. A single light failure will not adversely affect crew vision, and therefore, the operation of the aircraft. BOMBARDIER DHC 8-400 (PWC PW150) LIGHTING - FORWARD FLIGHT COMPARTMENT LIGHTS BOMBARDIER DHC 8-400 (PWC PW150) LIGHTING SYSTEMS FLIGHT COMPARTMENT LIGHTS GENERAL DESCRIPTION CONTINUED The flight compartment lighting system has the components that follow: • • • Panel and Instrument Lights Dome and Thunderstorm Lights Map and Utilities Lights PANEL AND INSTRUMENT LIGHTS The panel and instrument lights system supplies illumination for all the panels and instruments installed in the flight compartment. The instruments and panels are divided into six “light zones” as follows: • • • • • • Overhead Console Glare-shield Panel Forward Centre Console Aft Centre Console Pilots Flight Panel Copilots Flight Panel In addition, there are four circuit breaker panels in the flight compartment which are lighted: • • • • Right DC Circuit Breaker Panel Left DC Circuit Breaker Panel Avionics Circuit Breaker Panel 115V AC Variable Frequency Circuit Breaker Panel One circuit breaker panel light is installed above each of the four panels. BOMBARDIER DHC 8-400 (PWC PW150) LIGHTING - AFT FLIGHT COMPARTMENT LIGHTS BOMBARDIER DHC 8-400 (PWC PW150) LIGHTING SYSTEMS FLIGHT COMPARTMENT LIGHTS PANEL AND INSTRUMENT LIGHTS CONTINUED 5V DC POWER SUPPLIES PURPOSE The 5V DC power supplies change 28V DC aircraft power to 5V DC lighting lamp voltage, and provide control of lamps intensity. Each of the light zones has its own variable output 5V DC power supply (PS). The six power supplies (PS1 through PS6) are located behind the wardrobe and are electrically protected by eleven circuit breakers (3314-CB1 to CB11). The circuit breakers are installed on the EMERGENCY LIGHTS/5V DC LIGHTING panel behind the wardrobe. Each power supply receives 28V DC from the aircraft power distribution system. The output from the power supplies vary from 0 to 5.7V DC. The dimmer knob is a potentiometer that adjusts the power supply output. As the dimmer knob is rotated from OFF to BRT, the output voltage increases from 0 to 5.7V DC which increases the brightness of the lights. Rotating the dimmer knob fully counter-clockwise turns off the lights. Small 5V, (1A) lamp assemblies are installed internally in the Plexiglas facing of each panel to illuminate the panel markings. The lamp assemblies are disc shaped and are secured to the back of the panels with screws and covered with black insulation tape. A ‘+’ symbol on the face of the panels indicates the position of the lamps electrical connector on the back of the panel. When only aircraft battery power is available, the flight attendant panel will monitor the status of the boarding lights only. The boarding lights are the only system controlled from the flight attendant panel that gets electrical power directly from the aircraft batteries. If the boarding lights are in the off position, the panel will go into the sleep mode. In the sleep mode the panel minimizes power consumption and appears de−energized. When the boarding lights pushbutton is pushed, the boarding lights will come on and the panel comes out of the sleep mode. The panel will also come out of the sleep mode when the electrical busses that supply the other systems controlled from the flight attendant panel are energized. The cabin temperature, the NVS, and the lights other than the boarding lights, get their electrical power from the 28 VDC main, essential or secondary busses. When power is applied, these functions will remember their last condition (on or off).
