Anthropometric Measurements Department of Physiology College of Medicine Wednesday, September 2, 2020 Anthropometric measurement Measurement of body height, weight and proportions. An essential component of clinical examination of patients as well as infants, children and pregnant women. These measurements are compared to the reference data (standards) of the same age and sex group They are used to evaluate both under and over nutrition. Objective of Today’s Lab Evaluation of Obesity status of the class by various anthropometric measurements. INSTRUMENTS Weighing machine Measuring tape Measurements Waist Body Mass Circumference Index (BMI) (WC) Waist (to) Waist (to) Hip Stature Ratio Ratio (WHR) (WSR) The international standard for assessing body size in adults is the Body mass Index (BMI). While BMI reflects obesity in general, WC, WSR and WHR indicate central obesity. Weight Bare foot with light clothing (no shoes and no heavy clothing) in “kgs” (to the nearest.0 or 0.5 kg) Standing height Heels close to the wall Feet close together so that weight is equally distributed Head straight Neck neither flexed nor extended. Measure with provided scale and set squares (in centimeters to the nearest millimeter) Midway between the lower rib margin Waist and the iliac crest circumference Measure with measuring Tape. Subject should breathe out gently (to prevent him from contracting his muscles or from holding their breath) In centimetres to the nearest.0 or.5 cm. The hip circumference Measure at the widest part of the hip bones Make sure it is level (parallel to the floor) around the body, tightened but not so much as to depress the skin. In centimetres to the nearest.0 or.5 cm. Calculation of BMI Calculation of BMI (body mass index) Divide the Weight taken in kilograms by the square of the Height taken in meters. e.g., weight is 72 kg and height is 1.8 meters, = 72 / (1.8)2 = 72 / (3.24) = 22.22 kg/m2 (BMI ≥ 25 is overweight; ≥30 is obese) Classification Calculation of WHR (waist to hip ratio) Divide the waist measurement by the hip measurement to get the ratio Waist circumference Hip circumference (cms) Interpretation of WSR Calculation of WSR (waist to stature (height) ratio) Divide the waist measurement by the height measurement to get the ratio Waist circumference Height (cms) WSR categories (also called WHtR) Summary BMI: body mass index; WC: waist circumference; HC:hip circumference; WHR: waist-to-hip ratio; WSR: waist-to-stature ratio UW: Underweight; NW: Normal weight; OW: Overweight; OB:Obese Relevant YouTube Videos Measuring Waist & hip circumference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyL8UfGZMJE Measuring height at home with measuring tape https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzSWUrzhX4U Measuring height with a stadiometer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aS6Jt5KUSYU Thank You
