CLEARWATER FIRE AND RESCUE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE S.O.P. 608 SUBJECT: Hose Loads PAGE 1 OF 12 CATEGORY: SUBCATEGORY: Operations Suppression APPROVED BY: EFFECTIVE DATE: 04/23/03 REVISION DATE: 07/16/20 REVIEWED DATE: 05/24/22 SIGNATURE ON FILE, APPROVED TO FORM THIS DATE BY SCOTT EHLERS, FIRE CHIEF, FIRE & RESCUE DEPARTMENT FORMS REQUIRED: NOTE: Current forms are located on the Department’s SharePoint. PURPOSE: To establish and define standards and minimum quantities of hose supplies on apparatus and to establish standards for loading hose on fire apparatus in a safe, effective, and efficient manner. GLOSSARY: Minuteman: Type of hose load to ease in the stretching of hose. Dog Ear: A large fold at 50 intervals that extends out from the edge of the hose load to allow a gloved hand to be inserted into the fold. This assists in removing the hose from the hose bed. Shoulder Load: The portion of the minuteman load that is placed on the firefighter’s shoulder, typically 100 feet of hose. Drag Load: The portion of the minuteman load that is dragged behind the firefighter while stretching the shoulder load. “J”-Strap: A large carabineer that has webbing attached to both the hose and the carabineer. This is used to secure courtyard stretches to substantial objects to prevent the water thief from moving. SUBJECT: Hose Loads EFFECTIVE DATE: 04/23/03 S.O.P. 608 REVISION DATE: 07/16/20 CATEGORY: Operations SUBCATEGORY: Suppression PAGE 2 OF 12 608.1 1 ¾” 150-foot Rear Pre-Connect A. The rear pre-connect shall consist of 150 feet of 1 ¾” hose with a Fire Chief break-a-way nozzle and with a 75/175 fog nozzle tip loaded in a minuteman load. B. Loading 1. The female end of a 50-foot section of 1 ¾” hose is connected to the Officer Rear Discharge. For all Velocity Engines, the Officer Rear Discharge is the one closest to the center of the apparatus. 2. The 50-foot section is loaded in a flat load from the rear of the hose bed to the front of the hose bed. The first fold at the rear of the hose bed is a dog ear. 3. Once the 50-foot section is loaded, the male coupling is placed out of the hose bed towards the cab. This creates the drag load. 4. The Fire Chief nozzle is connected to the male coupling of 100 feet of 1 ¾” hose and placed on the rear end of the hose bed facing the rear of the apparatus. 5. The rest of the 100 feet of 1 ¾” hose is then loaded in a flat load starting at the rear of the hose bed going towards the cab of the engine approximately 8 feet, creating the shoulder load. 6. When all of the hose is loaded, the male coupling from the 50 foot drag load of 1 ¾” and the female coupling from the shoulder load 100 feet 1 ¾” are connected and placed on top of the 100 foot shoulder load nearest the nozzle.
