Study Notes
Hose Load Standards
- Established standards for the safe and efficient loading of hose supplies on fire apparatus.
- Minimum quantities defined for various types of hose loads.
Glossary of Terms
- Minuteman Load: Simplifies hose stretching.
- Dog Ear: Large fold at 50-foot intervals, aids in hose removal.
- Shoulder Load: Portion of minuteman load carried on the shoulder, typically 100 feet.
- Drag Load: Portion of minuteman load dragged behind during stretch.
- "J"-Strap: Carabineer and webbing device secures courtyard stretches.
1 ¾” 150-foot Rear Pre-Connect
- Consists of 150 feet of 1 ¾” hose with connected Fire Chief break-a-way nozzle.
- Loaded in minuteman fashion with specific connections:
- Female end connects to Officer Rear Discharge.
- First fold is a dog ear at the hose bed's rear.
- Male coupling towards the cab creates drag load.
1 ¾” Front Bumper Pre-Connect
- 150 feet of 1 ¾” hose with Fire Chief break-a-way nozzle on Pierce Velocity Engines.
- Loaded using a donut roll:
- Hose folded and rolled tightly.
- Coupling secured facing forward in the hose well.
1 ¾” Front Bumper 100-foot Pre-Connect
- 100 feet of 1 ¾” hose loaded in a flat format on Contender and Enforcer Engines.
- Male coupling attached and stored on top of hose load, secured by a cover.
1 ¾” Coil Hose Load
- Consists of 100 feet of 1 ¾” hose loaded in a coil.
- Nozzle attached and hose wrapped with Velcro straps to secure.
- Stored on top of 2 ½” hose bed for accessibility.
2 ½” Static Load
- 200 feet of 2 ½” hose loaded flat on the driver’s side.
- Female coupling faces the rear of the hose bed, ensuring easy access.
2 ½” Rear Pre-Connect
- 200 feet of 2 ½” hose loaded in minuteman order.
- Smoothbore nozzle with 1 1/8” tip attached at designated points.
3” Hose Loads
- Static Load: 300 feet of 3” hose loaded flat, utilizing Dutchman technique to prevent coupling flipping.
- Courtyard Load: Loaded in minuteman fashion for effective deployment.
5” Hose Loads
- Side-Wells: 50-foot sections attached at intake valves, loaded flat and secured with Velcro.
- Front Intake: 25-foot section loaded flat and secured for easy access.
Donut Rolls
- Each engine carries specified amounts of hose in donut rolls:
- Velocity Engines: 25-foot sections of 3” and 5” hose stored in designated compartments.
- Other Engines: Similar specifications with variations in storage locations.
Nozzle Specifications
-
1 ¾” Nozzles:
- Break-a-way Fog: Minimum flow of 175 gpm, adjustable to 200 gpm.
- Break-a-way Smoothbore: 1-inch tip with flow of 210 gpm.
- Each nozzle engraved with respective station number for identification.
