Medical terms pertaining to nervous system Nervous System – The nervous system is a complex collection of nerves and specialized cells known as neurons that transmit signals between different parts of the body. It is essentially the body's electrical wiring. – Structurally, the nervous system has two components: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. – The central nervous system is made up of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. – The peripheral nervous system consists of sensory neurons, ganglia (clusters of neurons) and nerves that connect to one another and to the central nervous system. They work as relay station for nerve signals. One nerve enters and another nerve exits from each ganglion Word Building with nervous system roots encephal(o) encephalitis Inflammation of the brain Brain Pertaining to blood vessels cerebr(o, i) cerebrovascular and brain Inflammation of the Cerebellum cerebell(o) cerebellitis cerebellum Cerebral cortex, cortic(o) cortical Pertaining to the cortex outer portion myeloma A tumor of the spinal cord Spinal cord, myel(o) bone marrow Inflammation of the gray poliomyelitis matter of the spinal cord Word Building with nervous system roots Meninges (membrane) Inflammation of the mening(o) meningitis meninges Pain of the nerve Nerve, neuralgia nervous neur(o,i) system polyneuritis Inflammation of two or more nerves A tumor of the neuronal Ganglion gangli(o) ganglioneuroma ganglion Sleep somn(i,o) insomnia Inability to sleep Word Building with nervous system roots A physician specializes in mental psych(o) psychiatrist illness Mind schizophrenia A condition characterized by phren(o) splitting of mind A condition of increased hyperesthesia sensitivity to stimulation such as touch or pain Sensation esthesia A condition of abnormal paresthesia sensation of numbness and tingling without objective cause A condition of impaired ability to coordinate movement leading to Coordination tax(o) ataxia staggering gait and postural imbalance Additional terms: Coma A state of unconsciousness A state of mental confusion due to cerebral Delirium disturbance Amnesia Loss of memory An impairment of intellectual function Dementia characterized by memory loss, disorientation, and confusion Euphoria an exaggerated feeling of well-being Syncope Fainting Additional terms: Damage of brain tissue due to occlusion of Stroke blood vessel by an embolus or thrombus or intracranial hemorrhage Motor disturbance characterized usually by Catatonia immobility and muscular rigidity A nervous condition characterized by Chorea involuntary movements of limbs or facial muscles Epilepsy Disorder characterized by recurrent seizures Thank you
