## LESSON 6 - FAMILY RESPONSE TO CLIMATE CHANGE ### CLIMATE CHANGE - Large changes in the earth's weather patterns over long periods of time - These changes have an effect on temperature, storms, rain, and also sea level - Believed to have started during the industrial revolution ### CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE - **Greenhouse Gases**: gases that make the world hot; produced by vehicles, factories, and burning of fuels - **Deforestation**: excessive cutting of trees - **Pollution**: affects the quality of air, water, and land - **Excessive Consumption of Energy** ### RIGHT WAYS OF RESPONDING TO CLIMATE CHANGE - **Conserve Energy** - **Lessen Plastic Use** - **Implement Waste Segregation and Recycle** - **Minimize Water Usage** - **Advocate for Local Products** - **Take Action to Plant Trees** - **Educate Each Other** ### 1. CONSERVE ENERGY AS A FAMILY - Conserving energy as a family by turning off the lights and appliances when not in use - Practice using natural light to save energy ### 2. LESSEN PLASTIC USE - Bringing reusable bags and containers instead of using plastics ### 3. IMPLEMENT WASTE SEGREGATION AND RECYCLE - Segregate household waste and recycle items that can be reused, such as plastic, paper, and bottles to reduce the amount of waste. ### 4. MINIMIZE WATER USAGE - Save water by using a bucket in the shower, reusing water for watering plants, and making sure there are no broken faucets in the house. ### 5. EDUCATE OTHERS - As a family, talk about environmental issues and exchange ideas on how to help. ### COMPASSION - Caring for and understanding the suffering of others, along with wanting to help alleviate their suffering. - It pushes us to act for the good of our neighbors and the environment. ## VALUES EDUCATION 7 - FAMILY: NATURAL INSTITUTION OF LOVE ### NATURAL INSTITUTION - Something that exists everywhere because it is important for everyone. - It was not invented or deliberately developed. - Examples: Marriage, Family, Religion, Education, Community ### NATURAL INSTITUTIONS - **Marriage & Family**: It is natural for people to love and look for someone to marry and have a family with. - **Religion**: It is natural for people to acknowledge a Creator or a Higher Being whom they can serve/worship and look for people who have the same beliefs as them. - **Education**: Teaching and learning are natural processes of passing skills and knowledge from one generation to another. - **Community**: It is natural for people to come together to socialize, support each other, and share their knowledge and resources. ### FAMILY AS A NATURAL INSTITUTION - The family exists in all societies - The family becomes a natural institution of love because it is where love is first experienced and learned ### 5 LOVE LANGUAGES - **1. Words of Affirmation**: Expressing love and recognition through words. Example: Leaving a note that says "the dish is so good, grandma". - **2. Acts of Service**: Expressing care and love through actions. Example: Making coffee for your dad; helping your siblings with their projects. - **3. Giving/Receiving Gifts**: Expressing love through gift giving. Example: Giving a self-made love letter for parents - **4. Quality Time**: Expressing love by spending time together. Example: Organizing a movie night for the family; cooking with your parents. - **5. Physical Touch**: Expressing love through physical gestures such as hugging or holding hands. Example: Hugging your parents; sitting close to each other while watching TV. ## VALUES EDUCATION 7 - FAMILY PRAYER AS A COLLECTIVE PRACTICE ### PRAYER - Way of bringing oneself closer to God - Method of talking to God so that we can convey to Him our grievances, wishes/requests, and gratitude. ### PRAYING TOGETHER - It is a unique opportunity that brings each family member closer to each other. - A way to transfer religious traditions to the next generation, teaching them the importance of faith and values. - Creates a nurturing environment for every member of the household ### BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY - According to BYU, prayer helps family members in dealing with problems and reduces the tension it causes in each other's relationship. - Strengthens unity and family ties ### IMPORTANCE OF PRAYING TOGETHER AS A FAMILY - Strengthening marriage - Reducing stress and tension - Strengthens faith - Promotes family unity - Betterment of the youth ### ROLES IN THE COLLECTIVE FAITH - Sharer (Taga-pagbahagi) - Leader (Taga-panguna) ### PRAYER GUIDE: ISLAM - Cleanliness - Facing "Mecca" - Proper Attire - Purpose - Following the Sunnah
