HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: Equipment Guidelines – 022 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Reserve Tower 22 Supplied Air System Use Revision: 4 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE All personnel working in the basket of Reserve Tower 22 during fire conditions shall be equipped with a SCBA for their protection should conditions warrant its use. POLICY Whenever the basket of Reserve Tower 22 is used for structural fire fighting or anytime the possibility of an IDLH atmosphere exists, personnel shall have a SCBA equipped with a buddy breathing hose in place and ready to use for their protection. PROCEDURE Reserve Tower 22 is equipped with a 4500 PSI breathing air system that is to be used with a SCBA. Tower 22 is equipped with air hoses that connect inside the basket for use with the buddy breathing connection on the SCBA. Two 8 foot hoses are located in the passenger side rear compartment and there are two additional 8 foot hoses located in the left rear tower basket inside a small storage box. Firefighters equipped with SCBA air packs will be able to breathe directly off the supplied air system (during fire conditions or whenever the possibility of an IDLH atmosphere exists) of Tower 22 by following these steps. 1. Have an SCBA pack donned and in use. 2. Utilize a supplied air system hose from the storage box on the rear of the basket. 3. Connect the male end of the supplied air system hose into the female port inside the basket of Reserve Tower 22. (Note: there are two ports inside the basket, both on the front panel) 4. Connect the female end of the supplied air system hose to the male end of the buddy breathing hose on the SCBA. Whenever the need arises to work outside the Reserve Tower 22 basket, the firefighter only has to disconnect the supplied air system hose from the buddy breathing connection and they will now be breathing from the donned SCBA. 1 Note: No air will flow from the SCBA bottle to the wearer whenever a supplied air system hose is connected to the buddy breathing connection maintaining the residual bottle pressure. EXCEPTIONS REFERENCES DEFINITIONS SCBA - Self Contained Breathing Apparatus. SCBA are 4,500 psi rated high pressure packs. End of Document 2
