HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: SAFETY GUIDELINES – 009 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Emergency Evacuation and Shelter Plan Revision: 1 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2024 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE To establish an Emergency Action Plan for evacuating personnel and provide a safe shelter during an emergency. POLICY It shall be the policy of the Hoffman Estates Fire Department to follow this guideline. In the event of a fire or other emergency, all personnel shall evacuate immediately. PROCEDURE In the event of an emergency, personnel are alerted by: -Sounding of the fire alarm -Public address announcement system -Verbal Announcement -Northwest Central Dispatch Station Alerting Station Personnel 1. In the event of an emergency, personnel shall evacuate by means of the nearest available marked exit. 2. Portable fire extinguishers are provided in the workplace for employee use. In the event of a fire, any employee may use the extinguisher to attempt to extinguish the fire before evacuating. 3. Assembly will occur in front of the fire station on the apparatus apron or in the rear parking lot. Personnel will be accounted for by the Company Officer. 4. If it is clear, personnel will remove all apparatus from the station. 5. If personnel are safely able to retrieve their firefighting gear, they are to do so and begin extinguishing tactics and medical/rescue duties. 1 6. Once evacuation is complete, the Company Officer shall notify the Shift Commander to report the situation and status. Safe Sheltering Areas In cases of extreme weather emergencies such as tornado warnings, a safe sheltering area will be designated at each of the following locations: Station 21: The sheltering area will be in the west bathroom. Station 22: The sheltering area will be located in the classroom in the basement. Station 23: The sheltering area will be located in the men’s washroom area. Station 24: The sheltering area will be located in the basement. All personnel are to stay in these areas until given an all clear by the Company Officer. DEFINITIONS Tornado Warning: A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar with an imminent danger to life and property, issued by the National Weather Service. Shelter Area: A room located in the lowest level of the building that is constructed of reinforced concrete, brick or block with no windows and with a heavy concrete floor or roof system overhead.
