Describe the person's symptoms and, if possible, what was ingested, how much and when. While waiting for help, consider doing the following. If the poison was: - Poisonous fumes, such as carbon monoxide, get the person into fresh air immediately. -« Swallowed, remove anything remaining in the mouth. « A household cleaner or other chemical, read the label and follow instructions for accidental poisoning. If the product is toxic, the label will likely advise you to call the Poison Control Center at 800-222-1222. If you cannot determine the poison, if there are no instructions, or if it 1s a medication, call this number as well. « Follow Poison Control Center's treatment directions. « Remove clothing if the poison spilled on the person's clothing, skin or eyes. Flush the skin or eyes with cool or lukewarm water, using a shower if needed, for 20 minutes or until help arrives. - Bring the poison container (or any pill bottles) with you to the hospital. What NOT to do: Do not administer ipecac syrup or induce vomiting.
