Illustrate the scenario in a 1 whole sheet of paper. Think of possible solution to address the identified problem. On a separate sheet of paper, write a brief summary of your proposed solutions and some brief details. Then, imagine that your solution was implemented. Illustrate the scenario in Item 1, but this time with the problem already solved. Present your illustrations and proposed solution to your classmates. WHAT IS A CONCEPT PAPER? During the campaign period for the national elections, you most certainly hear candidates talking about their platforms and their plan for the country if they are elected. Even in the student council election in your school, the same thing is also conducted. All these people want their voters to see the improvements they want to implement, so that the latter can decide if they are worth the vote. In the academic and professional setting, an institution or agency is able to decide whether a certain project or research is worth the investment through a concept paper. Prior to the submission of a project proposal, proponents are requested to submit a summary of what the project is all about , the reasons for conducting the project, and how it will be carried out. This summary document is called a concept paper. A concept paper provides an overview of the project and helps funding agencies eliminate proposals that are likely disapproved. Hence, it helps save time and effort for both the proponent and the funding agency. CONCEPT PAPER Foundation of the full proposal Determine whether a certain project is feasible or not Pique the interest of potential funding agencies Used to obtain informal feedback on the ideas prior to preparing the full proposal Since a concept paper is a preliminary document for proposal, it shows a preview of the improvements that the proponent would like to have implemented. Concept papers can be helpful in addressing social issues especially since they aim to show solutions to tangible issues which plague society. THREE WAYS IN EXPLAINING A CONCEPT Definition Explication Clarification DEFINITION is a method of identifying a given term and making its meaning clearer. Its main purpose is to clarify and explain concepts, ideas, and issues by answering the question “what does it mean?”. This mode of explanation contains the term to be defined and the detailed exposition of the term through the use of illustration, examples and description. 3 WAYS OF DEFINING INFORMAL FORMAL EXTENDED INFORMAL DEFINITION PARENTHETICAL AND BRIEF EXPLANATION EXAMPLE OF INFORMAL DEFINITION Tocopherol (Vitamin E) is naturally found in vegetable oil, fish and nuts. Suga (BTS Rapper) is the most famous Korean rapper of all time. FORMAL DEFINITION Explains a term by incorporating the term to be defined (Species) the general category of the term (genus) and the quality that makes the term different from other term in the same category ( differentia). BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE System of scientifically naming organisms with two words Genus - The taxonomic category above species Species - The most basic taxonomic category consisting of individuals who can produce fertile offspring Common Genus Species name Rose Rosa Rubiginosa Dog Canis Familiaris Man Homo Sapien cat felis Catus mango mangifera Indica Durian Durio zibethinus EXTENDED DEFINITION Detailed way of defining a term and is usually composed of at least one paragraph. This type of definition incorporates various patterns of development to explain a concept. Formal and informal definition Comparison and contrast Narration Description Classification Functional analysis Process Analogy Cause and effect FORMAL AND INFORMAL EXTENDED DEFINITION EXAMPLE Min Yoongi (Rapper) is one of the prominent and award winning member of the boyband BTS. He is a rapper, record producer, singer and songwriter from Daegu, South Korea who is managed by Big Hit music and debuted as a member of South Korean boy group BTS in 2013. In huckleberry fin, for example when Huck and Jim are travelling down the Mississippi, white men come to their raft looking for a runaway slave. Huck hides Jim and makes a deliberate decisions to lie to the men, even though he believes he will go to hell for protecting and harboring a runaway slave. At other points in the novel, Jim helps Huck out of various difficulties and shows concern for his well being. DESCRIPTION EXTENDED EXAMPLE Friendship is a state of acquaintance between or among beings characterized by a strong bond shared through concern and caring. In true friendship the bond is mutually shared. This is, if either one or two friends is involved in a difficulty, such as problem with failing courses at school, problems with parents at home, or even problems of a much more serious nature, the other friend will provide help, encouragement, concern and perhaps even direct intervention. CLASSIFICATION EXTENDED EXAMPLE People who own a pet may be divided into categories (1) those who makes their pet a training ground before having a child (2) ones that just wanted somebody to guard their home (3) bored (4) just cause they could and (5) somebody who really view pets as family. CAUSE AND EFFECT EXTENDED EXAMPLE a man offends his neighbor by insulting him (the cause). His neighbor becomes angry (the effect and the next cause) and he in turn tells his friends (the next effect and cause). His friends also become angry (another effect and cause) and tell their friends (another effect and cause). EXPLICATION Method of explanation in which sentences, verses, quotes or passages are taken from a literary or academic work and then interpreted and explained in a detailed way. EXPLICATION OF “THE ROAD NOT TAKEN BY ROBERT FROST” The poem titled “The Road Not taken” by Robert Frost is about a man reflecting on a choice he once made. While the outcome of this choice is not implied to be positive or negative the speaker notes that the choice in itself and the consequences of that choice have made a huge difference in the way his life has unfolded. The poem is about the importance of choices. The poem begins with the speaker regretting that he could not have been two people so he could have at some point in his life taken two roads instead of being confined to one. He looked as far as he could to see what was ahead on one of the roads he could have taken, but he was limited to seeing only as far as where it turned and disappeared in the bushes. In the second stanza he says he took the other road because it was grassy and was possibly better because it was less travelled, though not much more than the other road The third stanza says both roads were covered in leaves that have been walked on infrequently, to the extent that the leaves covering them had not been made black from tramping feet. He also says he continued on the road he chose, and because he knew that one thing leads to another (“way leads on the way) he doubted he would ever return to this part of the road. Finally, he says he will tell the story when he is much older (“Somewhere ages and ages hence”) that he had the choice of taking once road over another, and having taken the one he did made the big difference in his life. CLARIFICATIO Method of explanation in N which the points are organized from a general abstract idea to specific and concrete examples. CLARIFICATION EXAMPLE Justice is a broad concept which encompasses a wide set of ideas, most of which also branch out into smaller notions. For instance, it can refer to the sentencing of a criminal based on due process. When an individual gets what he deserves, even outside the hands of the law, it is also consider as justice in some contexts. This may come in the form of vigilante justice, in which a person dissatisfied with the system doles out punishment to wrong doers. Poetic justice is also another related concept which is used in literature to show how the good is always rewarded while the bad forces always meet a grim end. In the context of this paper justice will be clearly delineated into any instance in which the law is successfully and fairly applied to an individual, resulting in either an arrest or release. To illustrate, if a thief is caught in the act by a band of villagers and was beaten right then and there, it will be considered justice in the context of the paper, as the process has not undergone due process. PARTS OF A CONCEPT PAPER A concept paper usually ranges from 500 to 2000 words and is usually divided into several parts. ELABORATE AND EXTEND (10 MINS) Each group will create their concept paper based on their stand and argument presented in the elicit part EVALUATE ( 10 MINS) THUMB Suga fails to indicate the page number in his concept paper.
