Branches of aortic arch 1. Brachiocephalic artery: which give Right subclavian & Right common carotid 2. Left Subclavian 3. Left common carotid wy Common Carotid artery Origin Right common carotid arises from brachiocephalic artery Left common carotid arises from Aortic Ach da Course It passes in carotid sheath under cover of sternomastoid muscle Termination It gives Internal carotid & External Carotid at upper border of thyroid cartilage en “Opposite disc between C3 & C4” Internal Carotid artery Origin: Terminal branch of common carotid at level of disc between C3, C4 Course H It passes in carotid sheath Enter the skull through carotid canal Supply: Brain & eyes R. N.B: Pulse of common Carotid can be felt anterior to sternomastoid just below mandible D Anatomist “great vessels” External Carotid Origin: Terminal branch of common carotid at level of disc between C3, C4 End: Inside the parotid gland, it gives Superficial temporal & Maxillary Branches: wy o From the anterior surface: it gives 1. Superior Thyroid “1st branch”: to thyroid gland 2. Lingual: to tongue da 3. Facial: to face o From the medial surface: it gives 4. Ascending pharyngeal “2nd branch” en o From the posterior surface: it gives 5. Occipital: to scalp H 6. Posterior Auricular: to scalp o Terminal branches: R. 7. Superficial temporal: To face & scalp 8. Maxillary: to face N.B: Pulse of facial artery can be felt against the lower border of mandible D N.B: Pulse of Superficial temporal artery can be felt anterior to the auricle while crossing the zygomatic arch Anatomist “great vessels” External jugular vein Beginning: Union of Posterior auricular vein & Posterior division of retromandibular vein wy Course: Descends in the neck superficial to sternomastoid muscle Termination: In Subclavian vein da Tributaries: en 1. Transverse cervical vein 2. Suprascapular vein 3. Anterior jugular vein H R. D Anatomist “great vessels” Internal jugular vein Beginning Continuation of sigmoid sinus at jugular foramen Course: wy Descend in the neck deep to sternomastoid Pass inside upper part of carotid sheath with internal carotid & last 4 cranial nerves da Pass inside lower part of carotid sheath with common carotid & vagus nerve en Termination: Joins subclavian vein to form brachiocephalic vein Tributaries 1. Inferior Petrosal sinus 2. Common facial vein 3. Lingual vein H R. 4. Pharyngeal vein 5. Superior thyroid vein D 6. Middle thyroid vein Clinical importance: it is used for insertion of central venous catheter Anatomist “great vessels”
