Study Notes
Great Vessels
-
Branches of Aortic Arch:
- Brachiocephalic artery, giving rise to the right subclavian and right common carotid arteries.
- Left subclavian artery.
- Left common carotid artery.
-
Common Carotid Artery:
- Origin: Right from brachiocephalic artery, left from aortic arch.
- Course: Passes within the carotid sheath, under the sternomastoid muscle.
- Termination: Divides into internal and external carotid arteries at the upper border of the thyroid cartilage, opposite the disc between C3 and C4.
-
Internal Carotid Artery:
- Origin: Terminal branch of common carotid artery at the level of the C3-C4 disc.
- Course: Passes through the carotid canal in the skull.
- Supply: Supplies brain and eyes.
-
External Carotid Artery:
- Origin: Terminal branch of common carotid artery at the level of the C3-C4 disc.
- End: Inside the parotid gland, it divides into superficial temporal and maxillary arteries.
- Branches from Anterior Surface: Superior thyroid artery (to thyroid gland), lingual artery (to tongue), facial artery (to face).
- Branches from Medial Surface: Ascending pharyngeal artery.
- Branches from Posterior Surface: Occipital artery (to scalp), posterior auricular artery (to scalp).
- Terminal Branches: Superficial temporal artery (to face and scalp), maxillary artery (to face).
External Jugular Vein
- Beginning: Union of posterior auricular vein and posterior division of retromandibular vein.
- Course: Descends in the neck, superficial to the sternomastoid muscle.
- Termination: In the subclavian vein.
-
Tributaries:
- Transverse cervical vein.
- Suprascapular vein.
- Anterior jugular vein.
Internal Jugular Vein
- Beginning: Continuation of sigmoid sinus at jugular foramen.
- Course: Descends in the neck, deep to the sternomastoid muscle, passing inside the upper part of the carotid sheath. (with internal carotid and last 4 cranial nerves). Passing inside the lower part of carotid sheath with common carotid and vagus nerve.
- Termination: Joins subclavian vein to form brachiocephalic vein.
-
Tributaries:
- Inferior petrosal sinus.
- Common facial vein.
- Lingual vein.
- Pharyngeal vein.
- Superior thyroid vein.
- Middle thyroid vein.
- Clinical importance: useful for central venous catheter insertion.
