Flashcards

Brachiocephalic Artery

A major artery that branches off the aortic arch and supplies the right side of the body.

Left Subclavian Artery

A major artery arising from the aortic arch, supplying blood to the left arm and chest.

Left Common Carotid Artery

Artery branching off the aortic arch, supplying blood to the left side of the head and neck.

Common Carotid Artery (Origin)

Branches from the brachiocephalic artery (right) and the aortic arch (left), originating near the neck.

Great Vessels

  • Branches of Aortic Arch:

    • Brachiocephalic artery, giving rise to the right subclavian and right common carotid arteries.
    • Left subclavian artery.
    • Left common carotid artery.
  • Common Carotid Artery:

    • Origin: Right from brachiocephalic artery, left from aortic arch.
    • Course: Passes within the carotid sheath, under the sternomastoid muscle.
    • Termination: Divides into internal and external carotid arteries at the upper border of the thyroid cartilage, opposite the disc between C3 and C4.
  • Internal Carotid Artery:

    • Origin: Terminal branch of common carotid artery at the level of the C3-C4 disc.
    • Course: Passes through the carotid canal in the skull.
    • Supply: Supplies brain and eyes.
  • External Carotid Artery:

    • Origin: Terminal branch of common carotid artery at the level of the C3-C4 disc.
    • End: Inside the parotid gland, it divides into superficial temporal and maxillary arteries.
    • Branches from Anterior Surface: Superior thyroid artery (to thyroid gland), lingual artery (to tongue), facial artery (to face).
    • Branches from Medial Surface: Ascending pharyngeal artery.
    • Branches from Posterior Surface: Occipital artery (to scalp), posterior auricular artery (to scalp).
