The singer and composer Ryan Cayabyab has played a significant role in modernizing and popularizing Filipino music. Francis Magalona pioneered fusion of music and social commentary, in which his songs address relevant social issues. CONTEMPORARY DANCE Ethnic dance is vital in preserving and expressing cultural identity. Ballroom dancers often perform in social events. This kind of dance requires pairing up and dancing close embrace, while moving gracefully to the rhythm. Ballroom dance also enhances the physical coordination, teamwork, and adaptability of those who perform it. Ballet position contributes to visual appeal of the overall performance; it provides a foundation for proper alignment and balance of the body, as well as fluid transitions between movements. Francisca Reyes systematically documented and categorized the various folk dances of the Philippines. She is also the first National Artist in Dance in the Philippines. Ligaya Francisco-Amilbangsa contributed to the preservation of traditional Filipino dance by researching and promoting the pangalay, a pre-Islamic traditional dance.
