Orthostatic Hypotension ▪ A drop in blood pressure that occurs when a person stands too quickly, this can deprive the brain of oxygen, causing the patient to become light headed or to pass out. To assist a patient who may have symptoms: Raise their legs above the level of their heart. This increases the blood flow to the brain which will reduce the feeling of being light-headed VITAL SIGNS TEMPERATURE Oral = Normal 98 to 99 deg. F Avg. 98.6F Rectal = 99.6 deg. F Axillary = 97.6 deg. F ▪ Hypothermia= lower than normal temp below 95 F ▪ Pyrexia “Fever” = elevated temp/fever ▪ “Medically” a fever is 100.4 F up to 105.9 F ▪ Hyperpyrexia = life threatening temp. >106 deg. F VITAL SIGNS Adult Pulse: 60 to 100 beats per min. child ages 4 to 10 is 90 – 100 beats a min. Tachycardia- fast heart rate (>100 beats a min.) Bradycardia- slow heart rate ( 20 breaths per min) “quick, shallow breathing” Dyspnea - difficulty breathing, “air hunger” OXYGEN ADMINISTRATION - Flow rate is 3 -5 liters per min. - Nasal cannula or face mask What is cyanosis? o Bluish color in the skin, lips, and nail beds caused by a shortage of oxygen in the blood oHypoxic – low oxygen in tissues Normal oxygen % in blood –between 95% and 100% BLOOD PRESSURE - Measured by: - Sphygmomanometer and Stethoscope Normal reading = 120/80 Always stated as Systolic over Diastolic – Systolic pressure: measurement of the pumping action of the heart – Diastolic pressure measurement of heart at rest 80 mm hg is normal >90 mm hg would indicate increased hypertension
