Observing and Recording Behavior DRILL Identify if the given situation is valid or invalid and explain your stance Student K have so many responsibilities. This includes being a working student, a student, and a leader. In line with this, Student K is having difficulty managing them at the same time. Unfortunately, Student K failed to fulfill their responsibility as a leader in a certain subject. Is it valid to criticize Student K for not fulfilling their responsibility as a leader, given the said situation? If invalid, why? WELCOME! OBJECTIVES Define behaviour and discuss behaviour modification program as well as its steps Distinguish the two behavioural assessments used for behaviour modification program Behaviour is the actions and mannerisms of an individual: unconscious or self-aware. Behaviour Modification Targeting a specific behaviour for a development. Behavioural Assessment Direct Assessment observing and recording a client’s behaviour immediately. Indirect Assessment interviewing the client 5 5 about their behavior Direct assessment is mostly used and preferred unlike indirect assessment that relies on a person’s These behavioural assessments (direct & indirect) are used as methods for developing behaviour Steps for developing Behaviour Modification Program 1. Defining Target Behaviour Target Behaviour is the behaviour that you want to observe, record, and study. This means that in order for a behaviour to be observed, you must first have a behaviour definition. Behaviour Definition How do we know that the behaviour of a person or an individual is exhibiting the behaviour we are talking about? If a child is having a tantrum, how do we know that the action of that child is “tantrum?” How can we determine if one’s action is a behaviour? Behaviour Definition Behaviour definition is the act of actively describing specific behaviour that the client exhibits. The name of the act being executed by the client is called label. For instance: Behavioural Definition. Chloe says no to her boss when he commanded her to do something that is not part of her job. Label: Assertiveness Behaviour Definition Another example: Behavioural Definition. Nicos bites their nails whenever they’re feeling anxious. Label: Nail-bitting Behaviour Definition Behavioural Definition is the indication of an action that the observer is observing for;hence, the target behaviour. Before the actual observation starts, the observer must first define the behaviour he/she is looking for to differentiate the target behaviour to other behaviour that will It is important to choose a target behaviour that is socially acceptable and significant. However, it is also important to consider the main objective of observing and recording behaviour, which is to provide accurate treatment to the client. 2. Determining Logistics of Recording Observer is the person observing the client for the target behaviour. In some cases, the client becomes the observer. That method is called self-monitoring, which includes the client becoming self-aware for the target behaviour that might occur. When and Where to Record? The observer observes the client in a specific period (Observation Period.) Natural Setting - Observing the client in a place where the day-to-day basis occurs (e.g. home, classroom, etc.) Analogue Setting - Observing in a place foreign to the client (e.g. clinic, consultation room, etc.) Reactivity When a child who usually throw tantrums realizes he or she is being observed, this may result to a child lessening that behaviour and may result to a more reserved When and Where to Record? Structured Observation - Observer arrange specific activities to occur in an observation. Unstructured Observation - No instruction or format is set by the observer, and the client is allowed to move freely. 3. Choosing Record Method Observer is observing and recording the client’s behaviour continuously (continuous recording). There are 4 dimensions that the observer can record of the target behaviour and those are frequency, duration, latency, and intensity. The different recording methods are percentage of opportunity, product recording, interval recording, and time sample recording. Continuous Recording - continuous recording of every behavior occurring during the observation. Product Recording - outcome of the occurrence of the behavior. Interval Recording - occurrence and nonoccurrence of the behavior in consecutive intervals of time Time sample Recording - occurrence and nonoccurrence of the behavior in discontinuous intervals of time 4. Choosing Recording Instrument The medium the observer used to record the target behaviour. For instance, the observer uses pen and paper to take note of the duration and frequency of the target behaviour. This includes frequency data sheet, duration data sheet, and interval data sheet. Interobserver Agreement (IOA) The observers should come up with a same conclusion for the client’s behavioural definition. This is also a good characteristic of a behavioural definition because the observers can both agree that the behavioural definition is evident to the client. QUIZ TIME! 1. _________ is the behavior that the observer is observing to the client. 2.This is where the client is the observer. 3. This assessment includes interviewing the client. 4. Exact definition or description of the action the observer is observing. 5. The name of the said action the observer is observing. 6. The person observing the client. The client can also be the _____ 7-10. Give the different dimension of recording the target behavior. 11. The behavioral assessment are used as methods for developing a ____ 12-15.
