The NCD’s are non-infectious illnesses but can be inherited or developed based on individual’s lifestyle. Among the top 50 causes of death in the Philippines, coronary heart disease ranks as first. The damage may be caused by various factors including: smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, overweight or obesity, physical or inactivity, diabetes or insulin resistance, stress, and sedentary lifestyle. (WHO, 2017) What is Healthy Lifestyle? A lifestyle which includes activities and habits that encourage the development of total physical, mental, and spiritual fitness, and which reduces the risk of major illness. Healthy activities and habits include regular exercise; a balanced, nutritious diet; adequate sleep and relaxation; abstaining from smoking and taking nonessential drugs; and moderating the intake of alcohol. WHY IS SMOKING HARMFUL Almost every organ in the body is damaged when a person smokes. It weakens the body and leads to many diseases. Each stick of cigarette has more than 4,000 chemicals and consuming it would cut anindividual's life for at least 5 minutes. The smoke contains hydrogen cyanide (a deadly substance used in gas chambers), insecticides, methanol and butane fuels, benzene (causes leukemia), cadmium and formaldehyde used for embalming) Harmful substance of Tobacco Tar- is a harmful byproduct of smoking cigarettes. This toxic substance is carcinogenic and accumulates inside the respiratory system. Tar build-up disrupts clearing process of the lungs and ruin air sacs. Harmful substance of Tobacco Nicotine- is a toxic chemical compound that mostly consists nitrogen, which cigarettes addictive. It makes the heart beat fast, lightheadedness, stomach. Harmful substance of Tobacco Carbon monoxide-is a poisonous chemical from burnt cigarette that makes the heart do more work to supply sufficient oxygen in the body. Thus, smokers have a higher risks of having cardiovascular diseases like angina and hearts attacks. 3 Kinds of Smoke Mainstream smoke or first-hand smoke- the smoke directly inhaled into the smoker’s lungs through the burning cigarette. Side stream or second-hand smoke- the smoke breathed out by the smoker from their lungs. Third-hand smoke- refers to the cigarette offshoots offshoots which is attached to the smokers' hair and clothing as well as various surfaces like walls, floors, furnitures, chairs, and toys ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION Over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases and other serious problems including: High blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, liver disease, and digestive problems. Alcohol interferes with the brain’s communication pathways, and can affect the way the brain looks and works. These disruptions can change mood and behavior, and make it harder to think clearly and move with coordination. DIETARY HABITS What is a Poor Dietary Habit?
