Education: the knowledge, skill, and understanding that you get from attending a school, college, or university 1. Globalization: the process by which the world's citizens are becoming increasingly connected to and dependent on one another 2. Individual Identity: the group of characteristics and values people use to define themselves as individual 3. Collective identity: the common characteristics and values used to define a group 4. CRTC: Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission 5. Francophone: a person whose first language is French 6. Anglophone: a person whose first language is English 7. Multiculturalism: a policy that supports respect for a diversity of languages, beliefs, traditions, values, religions, and other aspects of culture 8. Consumer: a person who buys goods or services for personal use 9. Migration: the movement of people from one region or country to another 10. Urbanization: the process by which so many people move into rural areas close to existing cities that these areas become urban 11. Homogenization: the process by which cultures become more alike in terms of values, attitudes, beliefs, customs, language, and traditions 12. Acculturation: a change in an individual or a group that results from contact with another group 13. accommodation: making adjustments or reaching compromises to allow for differences 14. assimilation: the process by which a minority culture adopts a dominant culture and is absorbed into it. It often involves the loss of language. 15. cultural revitalization: an effort to restore new life to a culture 16. Universalization of pop culture: The spread of one popular culture around the world 17. Hybridization: the mixing of identities and cultures in new and different ways 18. cultural diversity: the variety of human cultures in a specific region or in the world as a whole 19. spirituality: the quality or state of being concerned with religion or religious matters: the quality or state of being spiritual 20. affirmation of identity: a positive, assertive action to express who you are. 21. marginalization: putting a group of people in a lower or powerless position within society. 22. Cultural Contact: The interaction of two or more independent cultures. 2. International Trade: The exchange of raw materials, goods, and services among distant groups of people. 3. Mercantilism: A Eurocentric economic policy whereby European monarchs increased their wealth through international trade. 4. Capitalism: An economic system based on free markets, private ownership, of business and industry, and the profit motive. 5. Industrialization: The shift of a country's major economic activity from agriculture to manufacturing. 6. Imperialism: The policy of one country extending political, economic, or military control over another. 7. Raw Material: Unprocessed natural resources such as logs and iron ore. 8. Colony: A territory claimed and ruled by another country; in many instances, people travelled from the ruling country to create settlements and colonies. 9. Ethnocentrism: Judging another culture solely by the values and standards of one\'s own culture. 10. Legacy: Passing something on to future generations. 11. Depopulation: Substantially reduce the population of (an area) 12. Eurocentrism: The belief that European concerns, cultures, and values are superior to those of others Related Issue 3 Key Terms ========================= 1. Transnational corporation: a corporation that operates in two or more countries 2. Bretton Woods Conference: A conference where the Allied countries in 1944 established a number of financial institutions and a system of rules and regulations to promote international trade in the global economy. 3. Trade liberalization: The process of reducing barriers to trade. 4. Economic growth: an increase in the economy of a country or an area, especially of the value of goods and services the country or area produces 5. Foreign investment: investment in shares and other assets of another country 6. Privatization: the sale of government-owned industries and services to private businesses 7. Outsourcing: One company hiring another company to fulfil certain tasks in production. 8. knowledge economy: an economy in which growth is dependent on the quantity, quality, and accessibility of the information available, rather than on the means of production. 9. Stewardship: responsible management and use of land and resources so that future generations will enjoy healthy environments 10. Sustainable development: development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs 11. Environmental legislation: a collection of laws and regulations aimed at protecting the environment from harmful actions. 12. World Bank: A financial institution with headquarters in the United States, that provides loans to member countries in financial difficulty. 13. International Monetary Fund (IMF): an organization of 189 countries, working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world. 14. World Trade Organization: The only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. The goal of the WTO is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly and freely as possible. 15. Free trade: trade between countries with relatively few restrictions 16. Trading bloc: A group of countries working together to give one another better trading terms. 17. Tariff: A tax on imported goods or services meant to reduce competition with domestic goods or services. 18. Group of Seven (G7): An informal group of the seven more developed countries with the strongest economies, whose leaders meet annually to discuss global issues. 19. Subsidy: direct financial help, such as loans or lower taxes, that the government provides to an industry 20. Interdependence: the dependence of two or more people or things on each other. \"The new economic interdependence of the two nations\" 21. Disparity: a lack of equality or similarity, especially in a way that is not fair: the growing disparity between rich and poor Related Issue 4 Key Terms ========================= 1. Standard of living: level of material comfort as measured by the goods, services, and luxuries available to an individual, community, or nation 2. Quality of life: the degree of enjoyment and satisfaction experienced in everyday life that includes standard of living as well as non-material things, such as political and religious freedom, health care, and the environment 3. Non-government organization (NGO): a private charitable organization that provides international aid or relief, promotes economic equality, protects the environment, or promotes community development 4. Grassroots organization: a community-based organization working on local projects 5. Consumerism: a preoccupation with buying goods and services 6. Sustainable development: development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. 7. Clear cutting: cutting down all the trees in an area 8. Selective cutting: logging for specific trees without clearing the whole area 9. Ecological ethics: thinking about the environment from an ecological rather than a human standpoint 10. Gender inequality: unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. It arises from differences in socially constructed gender roles as well as biological differences 11. UNICEF: United Nations Children's Fund 12. Refugee: a person who flees his or her home by escaping to another country 13. Migrant worker: a person who leaves his or her family and country to find work 14. Pandemic: an epidemic occurring over a large geographic area that affects vast numbers of people and challenges 15. WHO: a United Nations agency to coordinate international health activities and to help governments improve health service 16. Civic responsibilities: duties toward one's community 17. Boycott: an organized campaign in which consumers refuse to purchase goods or services from a business or country because they disagree with its policies 18. Petition a written request signed by many people appealing to an authority or government for change.
