Forces of Globalization TWE do identity and the forces of globalization shape each other? Key Terms What might be the forces of globalization? - Technology - Trade - Worldwide Trade - Media - Economy Influence across social media - Resource Distribution - Manufacturing - Human Migration Less regulations - Easier modes of transportation - The Internet (Media) - Influence and more - Communication innovative/useful technologies - More efficient ways to transport - In- things - Companies with more wealth FACTORS OF GLOBALIZATION 01 TRADE 03 INTERNATIONAL MEDIA 02 TRANSPORTATION 04 COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY Trade, transportation, communication technology and the media have all SPED up the pace of globalization. People being MORE interconnected and interdependent. How does this affect our individual and collective identities? TRADE Reasons why people trade goods and services: 1. Obtain goods and services not available to them 2. Obtain better quality or less expensive goods and services 3. Obtain different goods (variety) and services than what is produced at home Economies of Scale Economies of scale are cost advantages reaped by companies when production becomes efficient. Companies can achieve economies of scale by increasing production and lowering costs (per unit cost). Canadian Transnational s Let’s Update What did you find in the article? Out of top ten richest people, 8 are american, and 1 has markets primarily in US (Bernard Arnault)(Sephora/Louis Vuitton) All successful celebrities have other companies (Ex, Rihanna with fenty beauty, Jay z with champagne business) Most of the young billionaires inherited the money from their family, example 19 year old billionaire Clemente De Vechio inherited his dad’s business when he turned 18. Most billionaires are old men. Many of the richest billionaires have made much of their money through inheritance. Some of the lower billionaires have past connections to the top billionaires. (exes, past friends) Examples include: Eduardo Saverin (former Harvard classmate with Mark Zuckerberg) Mackenzie Scott (Ex wife of Jeff Bezos) We don't fully understand the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire (1000x more) ❖ 1 million seconds = 11.5 days while 1 billion seconds is 11574 (31.7 years) ❖ Youngest billionaire on the list is 19 years old. What did you find in the article? Phil Knight was a key founder of Nike, serving as a chairman for 52 years. He retired from that position in 2016, but still ranks top 30 of the richest people in the world. Him and his family still own 20% of the company Its just weird how they are all over 40. Like theres no younger rich ppl. That’s just sad. (661 and 1945) And it's just sad the fact that elon musk can give 1 billion $ to EVERY PERSON ON EARTH, and still be the 3rd richest person. Sharing is caring you know. And if there were younger wealthy people, most of said wealth comes from inheritances and family wealth. Most of the Top 10 richest people specialize in Technology and Fashion/Retail. (One of the biggest growing industries) They are almost on a different plane of reality, it’s honestly hard to comprehend how much money they have Out of the top 100 richest billionaires, only 2 are “new” to the list this year (2024) Most of the Chinese billionaires are near the bottom of the list, while most of the American billionaires are on the top ten There are so many American billionaires (more than half of them are American). Adding on to second point, only 3 out of the top 100 billionaires are below 40 Out of the first 100 billionaires. North America has 46, South America has 6, Europe has 24, Asia has 23, Australia has 3 and Africa has 0. Even though this is a question I have, With all the resources that lie within Africa, why are there no billionaires in Africa. Out of the the first 100 riches 2 billionaires only 1 was Canadian. What questions do you have? Number 68 and 71 were very contradicting (BMW) Does acquiring so much many lead to unethical practices? Should billionaire be forced to contribute part of their wealth towards global issues (Global warming)? What good do these billionaires do for our society? It really says just one company when looking at the richest people, but you have to ask how many more do they have footholds in or invest in. To Bernard Arnault, at the age of 75 what are you going to do with 233 B? Should billionaires donate a significant portion of their wealth to charity? To what extent do billionaires , control our society and way of living? d What questions do you have? Who are 18, 19 and 21 - $78.4 + $77.4 + $72.3 = $228.10 - Walton siblings who own Walmart What were some of the main causes for the ¼ of billionaires becoming poorer? Why did everyone get richer after 2020? (Not 104) What factors contributed to the growing wealth of the rich amid the COVID-19 crisis? Low transport costs help make it economically sensible for a factory in China to produce Barbie dolls with Japanese hair, Taiwanese plastics and American colorants, and ship them off to eager girls all over the world. Marc Levinson The Box: How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger TRANSPORTATION ➔ containers - large metal shipping boxes (seacans) that are built in standard sizes ➔ sealed and easily transferred ➔ goods are loaded into the container and then hoisted by cranes onto ships Made Shipping 1. Cheaper - there are associated costs like fuel for the ships 2. Faster to ship goods over long distances 3. Shipping more reliable because you can track 1 container than multiple parcels 4. Reduces theft - harder to get into a sealed container Ever Given … March 2021 Do shipping containers break apart? Shipping containers are not that stable if they were to fall in the water. Most often the cargo is destroyed or damaged or lost to “Davy Jones Locker” underneath the sea. But, the cargo ships have a design in the hull, a “u” shape putting the center of gravity at the complete bottom of the hull. The weight is then evenly distributed to weigh down the boat so that It will not often sink. - More than 1,300 containers are lost every year. - Only ⅓ of lost containers are recovered One ship lost a shipping container full of rubber ducks, and these ducks appeared on shores over a couple years. Scientists used them to track currents. There was a shipping container that apparently leaked pieces of plastic, spreading bits of plastic and littering Spain’s beaches. COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY Computers early development after WWII first personal computers developed in the late 1970s digital technology - changing data into numerical digits has changed the world ○ cheaper ○ smaller ○ more powerful ○ easier to operate Future of Computers I think in 100 years, it will be not used much there will probably be a new technology to replace it A Lot more Ai We can use computers to cure many diseases. More advanced hologram technology I think It's impossible to predict the technology of So advanced they will be able to solve 100 years later all our problems in 100 years computers can probably be in In 50 years, they have completely our brains. (Neuralink) changed our history drastically. What Neuralinks are a daily part of life will happen in the next 50 years?? Maybe it might be like Fahrenheit 451?? We can get microchips in our brain to be Better powered components (eg. The able to send signals to others just through thinking Sphere in Vegas is powered by 150 of We might be able to scan someone and be NVIDIA's A6000 Graphics cards) able to see the data of someone, their name age height etc. Cloning technology Media Concentration Media Convergence MEDIA ownership of the media in the hands of a few the use of electronic technology to integrate large corporation media such as newspapers, books, TV The internet is an interactive and the internet communication tool, much more than "gathering information". Where do you get your news? Is it interactive? Can you post comments? How is identity affected by ECONOMIC, POLITICAL, ENVIRONMENTAL and SOCIAL dimensions of Globalization? Political Dimension Who makes the decisions about how a society will run? What is the role of government and how do transnational corporations have an impact on decisions for the whole of society? Environmental Dimension Resulting from increased economic development and the growing demands for consumer goods, our environment is often sacrificed to meet these demands as quickly as possible. If we introduce new environmental standards and practices throughout the world, who will enforce these standards?
